Join us to hear Mapes speak about her book, respecting and caring for salmon and their special relationship to the health of ecosystems, our lands and waters, and other species and people.
With vibrant storytelling supported by science and traditional ecological knowledge, Mapes invites readers to understand the world where trees are kin, not commodities.
In a time of climate catastrophe, old-growth and other natural forests face existential threats caused by humans—and their survival is crucial to ours.
Ancient and carbon-rich, old-growth forests play an irreplaceable role in the environment. Their complex ecosystems clean the air, purify the water, cool the planet, and teem with life.
A call to rethink our relationship with forests:
So what’s the solution?

Protecting healthy waterways that still provide cold clean water is a great starting place. For waterways that have been logged or degraded, active and passive restoration efforts will be needed.

Reminder that we only have until FRIDAY to add our voice in support of the Roadless Rule.
When we say forests store carbon, we mean FORESTS. Not just trees. Carbon cycles keep the soil healthy, and leaving old growth trees keeps the forest cooler, wetter, and is one of the best climate solutions available to us. A fascinating (if frustrating) read:

All of the onslaught is intentional, we've just got to keep pushing back!
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has opened a public comment period on a proposal that threatens to dismantle the Roadless Rule, threatening the last of our intact public lands as a home for wildlife, a haven for recreation, and a heritage for future generations.

The form asks for more information than we are sending to the USDA (so we can target Congressional offices to oppose this in the same action) but we're not passing along to the USDA information like specific addresses (we keep city and state) and we mask the sender's personal email as well.
This is actually standard for commenting on any public process and not new to this Administration. Comments become part of the public record and are generally posted in "reading rooms" when, for example, they're submitted on regulations.gov.
