South African campaign aimed at highlighting the importance and value of new shark and ray sanctuary areas in our ocean.
The Pufadder shyshark and the Twineye skate are two Endangered species that are found in South Africa’s waters and nowhere else in the world.

This means that if we do not protect them in our waters, we could be directly responsible for their extinction.

Up to 38% of tiger sharks off Tahiti had at least one fishing hook stuck in their bodies.
A potential solution is hooks that may deter sharks. Another option is using carbon steel hooks.

Have you ever seen a shark with a hook before?

Over-fishing, damaging industrial activities, habitat destruction, climate change and pollution are not letting up.

By not increasing protection for our oceans, we risk a biodiversity crisis, ocean collapse and a subsequent economic catastrophe.

South Africa’s oceans are home to approximately 200 different species of sharks & rays, making it one of the most diverse shark & ray populations on the planet.

This #WorldWildlifeDay, we celebrate this but also recognise that it comes with a great responsibility to do what we can to protect them.
