My hope and optimism come from experience, not naivety. If you think I’ve lived a life surrounded by people who believed in me, you are greatly mistaken. I refuse to give up, & I suggest you do the same.

Be resilient. Survive. Persevere. No matter what this world throws at you, don’t be defeated.
Picture of me wearing a purple shirt among roses while smiling with the words:

“Hope and optimism are not products of an unchallenged life. They aren’t empty dreams. They are born out of adversity. They’re the results of pushing and fighting, despite the world telling you you’d fail, despite it telling you that you’re worthless. And time and time again, proving the world wrong.”

A recent study has found “a gap between corporations' plans to invest in environmental actions and sustainability and the actual development of transition plans.”

Not surprising, but, the truth still matters, even when it confirms what we already suspected.

It’s not too late. I think MIT is just the first.

It doesn’t. It’s just what people call Portland for short. It’s like NOLA for New Orleans or Philly for Philadelphia. It also distinguishes us from the other Portland (Portland, Maine). You say PDX, and people know which city you’re talking about.

i’ll start… 🖤

I’ve shared this one before. I’ll stop when enough people have heard of it!

I was asked by a friend today how are things in PDX, and I shared this clip with her. For a comedy show, @thedailyshow.com’s coverage of Portland has been pretty spot on, even down to the naked unicyclists with handlebar mustaches.

Yes, expect them at our emergency naked bike ride this Sunday.

It’s bad when every sentence you utter has to be corrected.

Thank you @oregonian.com for taking the time to fact check instead of just blindly repeating falsehoods, if only others would follow your example.

YES: A Wyoming librarian fired for refusing to pull LGBTQ books just won a $700,000 settlement for violation of her First Amendment rights. 👏 Let this be a warning to every censor-happy official in the country.

We want to know the root cause of homelessness so we can “solve” it. It’s the confluence of wealth inequality, housing commodification, inflated healthcare costs, no child or elder care, the list goes on.

But the root cause is us. It is the level to which we will tolerate our neighbors’ suffering.

Today is World Homeless Day, and after years reporting on this crisis, I'll just say: homelessness is neither inevitable nor intractable. It's the result of choices—political, economic, moral—that can be unmade.

And this: how we treat the unhoused is a bellwether for the violence we will tolerate.
