There's also a big influence from the meritocracy approach to authority. Authoritarians feel they've EARNED their position and you, an inferior, have NOT. They've worked hard to get to the point where their boots are on our necks, how DARE you challenge that.
Authoritarian leaders cannot stand hearing criticism when they are wrong because it reminds them of the scolding they once received from their control-freak parents. They overreact to even the smallest comment since every criticism touches an old bruise.
