"... Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him... in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."

HOLY CRAP!

Kash Patel when asked by Senator Klobuchar about an Assault Weapons ban:

"Senator, I think there are instances on this legislation that could prevent future attacks, but I’m not going to weigh in to the creation of legislation."

Now do something about it!

By a 7-4 vote, the full Federal Circuit has *affirmed* a lower-court ruling holding that many of President Trump’s tariffs exceed his statutory authority.

The ruling won’t go into effect until October 14, though—which gives the Trump administration plenty of time to seek intervention from #SCOTUS:

So free speech. Much viewpoint diversity. Very marketplace of ideas.
This doesn’t feel very free speech-y

The official voice of the U.S. government draws from 4chan trolls, explicitly white nationalist phrases and talking points, and radicalizing, dehumanizing, desensitizing language for its targets. I talked to propaganda experts about what it’s doing to us:

The official voice of the US government Is cruel, gross, and weird. What is that doing to us?
Joking memes about imprisonment, deportation, and death by alligator are designed to radicalize and desensitize.

It’s truly depraved for Trump to welcome Vladimir Putin to the US while Putin is actively wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes in Ukraine.

Trump calls this a peace summit but it’s just an opportunity to hang out with one of his dictator buddies. www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-a...

The billionaire CEO of the third richest company on the planet gives the President an actual block of gold so his company is exempted from US Government tariffs. And the whole thing is broadcast live on TV.

Anyone who can't see what is happening to this country is unsalvageable at this point.
Tim Cook pathetically kisses Trump's ass by pretending him with a "24 karat gold" gift
What Trump fails to understand, what he is not capable of understanding, is that a pillar of our economy and government is trust. Weaponing data erodes public trust, leading to less investment and fewer jobs.

To those around him who stay silent are severely damaging their country.

Moody's chief economist Mark Zandi says:
- We are headed for a recession
-The BLS data is totally reliable- for now
-The revisions are due to delayed reporting of DOGE govt layoffs
-Higher tariffs are dragging down the economy

Text from the hubby this morning at the grocery store. The next thing we will hear is that these tariffs are curing Americans of their caffeine addictions.

Statement from the largest economics association about the BLS firing

As context: AEA approximately never makes such public statements

This is a big deal
Trump and the GOP have proven themselves to be not only liars but anti-truth. Data is always a threat to despots, so the easiest thing to do is to get rid of the data. @erikamcentarfer.bsky.social's firing should be alarming to all Americans.

I would want a real social safety net like Medicare For All and unemployment benefits while job retraining. Tariffs are not a catch-all for keeping manufacturing jobs. Even with tariffs, technology changes an economy. I've been laid off before. It sucks. But hurting consumers won't help anyone.
Nothing is bringing manufacturing jobs from the 1960s back. We don't want low-wage manufacturing like textiles. We are the second largest manufacturer and should be focused on high-end manufacturing like semiconductors, not pandering to populists who think old factories can be brought back.
Just a reminder: none of these "deals" are actually trade deals. These are just frameworks at best, tweets at worst.

All of them leave us worse off because our effective aggregate tariffs prior to the second term were about 2.5%.

Trump is actively trying to make us worse off.

Republicans are waging a generalized war on science, but I think many of them don’t fully grok that RFK isn’t at war with science alone or per se: he’s at war with sick people, and of the view that only the lucky should be allowed to survive into old age. They are know nothings, he is Mengele.
RFK Jr. has now officially stated that he will dismantle the United States Preventive ServicesTask Force (USPSTF).

This is an independent body of expert scientists who volunteer their time to review data and provide guidance to Americans on important things like cancer screenings.

The task force determines which preventive services insurers must cover at no cost to patients.
