Some helpful phrases for being around someone this holiday season that might say things that trigger you:
Breathe first. Longer out than in.
“I’m not interested in discussing this. How was fishing?” Deflect and redirect.
“If you insist on continuing to bring this up I’ll leave the room. We can try again in a few minutes.” Boundary with option to reconnect.
“Since you are still talking about this even though I’ve told you I’m not comfortable with it, I am leaving.” Strong boundary and definitive removal of self and companions from setting.
Don’t engage or argue because you won’t change their mind and it will only cause you stress. Don’t be lured into the game. Strong boundaries and standing in your power will speak more words than any argument could.

Really, rest is resistance. Get some sleep. ✨💙 read what I said then phone down 🙏

Stop doomscrolling or distraction scrolling and get some rest.
Nothing to do right now but trust that in this moment, you are in a room, it’s warm, you’re heart is still soft, your pillow is cradling your head, there are things around you to be grateful for, and you can think more tomorrow. Now is just time for rest. Nothing is ever solved past 9pm. You’ve done enough for today.
This time is not handled in buckets, but spoonfuls.
You’re not alone. We all are here together. Look around the room- in this moment and in your physical space right now, all is well.

Big theme with my clients this week was “pendulating.”
Imagine a pendulum swinging side to side
Inner work - outer work
Rest- action
Not what iffing - preparedness
Exhaustion - energy
Despair - anger
Old triggers - new situations
Staying quiet - speaking up

When we allow the feelings that arise with compassionate awareness and welcoming, breathe with them, look at what is real right now and true, then assure that frightened part of us of these truths, we can move forward with what we need in the moment to best show up for ourselves and each other.

We develop trust in ourselves and the goodness around us, and we become part of that goodness for ourselves and others.

So let the pendulum swing but do not let it get stuck in any position too long. Trust the flow of energy, wisdom, and resilience that flows through and around you and we will be able to handle whatever these times bring, together.
