My thoughts on how some gaming companies and websites are focused on the wrong thing and have no idea who their audience actually is which is, in part, why they're struggling...

When I got a 2nd job at Guitar Center over the holidays I was reminded what the average gamer looks like. Picture this, my coworker put hundreds of hours into Balatro because he could play it on his lunch break, or at the gym. Picture my other coworkers who had no idea about most of the newer games I referenced but immediately got excited when talking about buying Pokémon cards, which led to them telling me about their Pokémon-themed DND session, some would compliment my Atari sweater because they grew up playing Atari and had fond memories of it. Some of them couldn't afford to buy the latest game because they were working an extra shift to pay rent, or were taking care of a sick parent and didn't have the time to play games that often... all this to say, gamers aren't numbers that fit neatly on a spreadsheet. "Gamer" is a broad term. The "gamers" you're marketing or trying to appeal to aren't identical to you, or even to each other, they live radically different lives, and when your metrics for success are based around an imagined audience that doesn't actually exist the way you think they do of course you're going to fail.
