Others Like Me is the story of 14 women around the world, from different walks of life, who don’t have children. It’s also the story of why I had to find them and what they taught me. linktr.ee/nicolelouie

My last 2 book talks of the year will be very special, as they will take place in Sweden, where I lived for 6 years and where the book begins. Two of the women interviewed are Swedish, and I look forward to seeing them again. Join us at The English Bookshop. Free tickets: linktr.ee/nicolelouie

"Can humans not find peace with one another? With the earth? It's not a fond wish but a fretful demand. Can we not stop tyrannising and destroying and ransacking and squandering this one thing on which our lives depend?" (Orbital by Samantha Harvey 🌎📘)

Happy International Childfree Day!
Since the question I get asked most often during book talks is “How do I find community?”, here's a list of groups that meet online & offline for support & fun. They are primarily focused on the choice not to become a parent.

@nicolelouie.bsky.social's Others Like Me is a vital resource & tremendous gift in offering alternatives to enduring social and cultural narratives that still centre motherhood.

I just finished reading “Others Like Me: The Lives of Women Without Children” by Nicole Louie. A beautifully written book that features Louie's journey and stories from 14 women she interviews. Thoughtful, frank, thought-provoking, inspiring, and ultimately hopeful. 5 stars!

The Journey (Mary Oliver)

One day you finally knew
what you had to do, and began,
though the voices around you
kept shouting
their bad advice –
though the whole house
began to tremble
and you felt the old tug
at your ankles.

My quilt about women’s reproductive rights has been banned from all American Quilters Society shows this year. It’s been part of a traveling show with SAQA. My artist statement is too long for here. It’s on my website: laurashaw.net/quilts#/your-mother

“It is essential for our struggle for self-determination that we speak of love, as love is the necessary foundation enabling us to survive the wars, the hardships, & the sickness & the dying with our spirits intact. It is love that allows us to survive whole”

Invitation (Mary Oliver)
Just to be alive
on this fresh morning
in the broken world.
I beg of you,
do not walk by
without pausing
to attend to this
rather ridiculous performance.
It could mean something.
It could mean everything.
It could be what Rilke meant, when he wrote:You must change your life.

@massybooks.bsky.social haul today.

One of my 2025 intentions is to add books to my personal library that I would miss if we were to lose access to them via book bans etc.

Archivists will teach you that digital is the most fragile media. If you want something to endure, get a physical copy.

Nicole grew up in a traditional household in Brazil, but knew from an early age that motherhood was not for her.

When her partner decided he did want kids, she embarked on a journey of discovery that included interviewing 14 women without kids & publishing a book. Tune in! ow.ly/YvI250UAOHo
