#Oregon Oregonians have the ability to speak up!
Oregon law prohibits building nuclear reactors unless 2 criteria are met: a statewide vote of the people AND a national waste repository.

Neither of these criteria have been met and this bill is one of 11 currently in Salem designed to undercut these democratic & safety protections.

If you haven't heard about how bad things have gotten with nitrate pollution of people's well water in the Lower Umatilla Basin, listen to this episode of The Evergreen we did last year unpacking it all with Monica Samayoa & @antoniosierra.bsky.social, who've been covering this story for years:

“Without the proper workforce, you can and should expect that national forests will NOT be able to provide you the goods and services the American public deserves and have a right to from OUR public lands.”

Eville Gorham, a famed scientist who studied the ecology of peatlands and whom I had the great fortune to meet, once wrote that #Sphagnum #mosses contain more carbon than any other genus of plants in the world. This fact spurred my early research into the origins of Sphagnum bogs in #Alaska. 🌎🌲🍁🔥🌳🧪🌐

If you want to support an amazing Indigenous jazz artist look no further than Julia Keefe and the Indigenous Big Band! We have been so grateful to have had them perform here in Wallowa county!
"The contributions of Indigenous musicians to the quintessentially American art of jazz have long been neglected or utterly ignored. Vocalist Julia Keefe, an enrolled member of the Nez Perce tribe, has set about changing the conversation, one gig at a time."
Native American singer Julia Keefe brings her Indigenous Big Band back to Bay Area
Inspired by influential big band singer Mildred Bailey, Julia Keefe is looking to enhance Native American presence in the jazz world.

In Winter of 2024 we were very grateful to have Julia Keefe and members of the Indigenous Big Band come to play at the Josephy Fest in Joseph, OR. Julia calls the Wallowa valley as part of her heritage homeland. She's an amazing Nimipuu jazz singer!
Glad you are speaking about this. More people really need to know its not "ancient history" as some people want it to be seen.
I just put this into our reading list.
Thank you! 🙌

Super excited that this amazing book is finally available for preorder. It was written by over 50 Indigenous Peoples from around the world and contains stories, poetry, and critical thought pieces on how TEK is used and extracted from our communities and what folks are doing to protect it.

#MMIWG 💔🪶
Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls
MAY 5th is National Day of Awareness of MMIWG aka
‘Red Dress Day’. 😢😢
In honor of all the Native women who "vanished" without a trace, and yet no one did a thing about it. 😡
The year of 1877 sticks out very clearly to us,its the year of the flight of the Wallowa band of the Nez Perce happened & forced the exile of the Wallowa Band to include the young Chief Joseph, men, women and children from their homeland which is one of the reasons we exist as an org to repatriate.

This week on Larrakia Country, the Nth Aust Savanna Fire Forum brought together over 500 attendees to discuss the future of Indigenous-led fire management.

CIEHF’s Distinguished Professor Michael Bird presented on how Indigenous fire management practices sequester carbon as charcoal in soil.
This is a great resource for learning about what is going on and where when it comes to learning about Powwows and even ones where you might be visiting or living.

The Pacific Lamprey is an amazing creature. We promote this species & its recovery efforts here at NPWH. Indigenous Peoples have been relying on the lamprey for thousands of years. This fish is older than dinosaurs & trees.
