People don't understand this but when you are grading essays you are usually grading the same essay with minor variations over and over, and they all start to blur together after a point.

Did you know a major theme of Hamlet is inaction vs action, and this drives the central conflicts???

I've had a scattering of like 5 kids in a class that were like this before, they learn by watching their peers, but this is the first time I've had a FULL 38 that are like this. We're STRUGGLING.

I genuinely think it's a trauma response from covid, these kids would have been in 4th/5th grade when the shut down happened and I don't think they've ever recovered. They can't work on their own, they need to be told at every step what they have to do.

student: but what do i put in the blank
me: what you think happens next
student: but i don't know what happens next
me: you're making a prediction
student: I don't know how.

it's also really hard to tell if it's a "can't" or a "won't" because they just literally stare at you until you put the pen in their hands and start telling them what to write. Do they not know how to do it or have they learned so much helplessness they're unable?? I don't know???

this is college preparatory and they can't even look at a picture of a sheep and then write the sentence "in the picture i see a sheep" i have to hold their hand throughout the entire process.

Things my gen-ed class are struggling with that 10th graders REALLY should not be struggling with:
-giving a one sentence summary of something they just read or heard
-looking at a picture and writing a sentence about what they see in the picture
-reading a question and giving a one sentence answer
