Salary info isn't exclusive - job titles listed are the "most common" identified within the economic analysis that necessitated geoscience skills. There were 5,000+ job listings, some would also include geography, just not as many repeats - see the methodology on the website for more info here 📊
As for student numbers, you're right, (physical) geography is not included in these sections as we didn't have access to the data, and didn't have ~£6k additional budget to purchase the data from HESA, unfortunately. If someone has the data, we'd be happy to include it - there's an open call.
Where 'geology' is used in the report is when we are referring to the specific subject as identified by exam boards, not interchangeably with geoscience - consciously.

Part of the campaign is reframing that geoscience is far broader than these definitions, important when it's not the subject name!
We consciously chose "geoscience" to be more inclusive, and the AKAs in the video are to further explain what this is for those that might have heard of one of those terms (or studied it as GCSE and A-Level are called "geology" alone).
The @geolsoc.bsky.social team are busy building more careers profiles to highlight this diversity - we have 103 submissions so far to work our way through - and they'll be on the site in due course: www.thisisgeoscience.com

I'm curious, what made you think that non-geology subjects were excluded?

Physical geographers and hydrology are indeed types of geoscience, and #ThisIsGeoscience is designed to be inclusive - just as the @geolsoc.bsky.social displays with its Geoscience For the Future posters.

On 2 September we're launching our This is Geoscience campaign to reframe public understanding of #geoscience and inspire the next generation of geoscientists ⚒️ 🧪

Join us to be amongst the first to see the report and campaign, and help share them far & wide. Free & open to all tinyurl.com/3r99dzw5
A simple invitation to an online event, the text reads "This is Geoscience" Date: 2 Septemner 2025 from 18:00, Location: The Geological Society & online, free to attend, all welcome. The text is white on a bright blue background. On the right of the text is an image of a person in cold weather gear using a shovel to break ice/snow beneath them.
We've never done this before, and it's not an easy thing to do, so we would LOVE to see a great turnout of our #LGBTQ+ geoscientists & allies so that we can build on it and come back year on year! ⚒️
Join us before the parade, during, after... We'll be there for respite and fun from 10.00! ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🤎🖤
There is lots we can't do at the moment to make the world a better place, but opening up @geolsoc.bsky.social on the day of #Pride in London (we're on the parade route!) might be one of them!
Join us for drinks, nibbles, & photo booth fun with our LGBTQ+ group! 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

There is some chaos again in academic publishing, so a quick reminder that some societies manage their own journals in house & offer OA options, discounts, read & publish deals etc. Any "profits" go back into the Society to support charitable activities incl. education & funding #AcademicSky
I keep thinking (hoping?) I will start to use BlueSky regularly and it'll be different to the other place, that it'll be "better" somehow, but the world seems to be burning and it's just...

We deserve better. ALL of us.

We write to you today with heavy hearts to let you know that under the new Executive Order: Ending Radical and Wasteful Government DEI Programs and Preferencing, NASA has been tasked with ending all work and programs affiliated with diversity, equity, and inclusion. Current and future proposal calls will no longer have an Inclusion Plan requirement, and the contract role I’ve played in building and maintaining this incredible group of individuals and studying our inclusion efforts has ended.
I'm meeting Nancy at the MetSoc booth for 16.30 if you're available?
Let's try to meet and chat MetSoc outreach, Oz!? 😊
