Today, a Veteran trusted me with their experiences which caused their TBI, and asked me questions because they had a personal stake in my research. It’s easy to lose sight of motivations, but learning from real people affected by such work is an efficient reminder of what is truly important.

Yesterday a senior leader in federal relations for our university sincerely informed me that our institution is "working hard to understand things and not overwhelm congressional offices" with researchers concerns in this moment.

Let my Thursday frustration be your Friday motivation.
Ok scientists & those who love science 🧪: here is another exhortation. Call Congress TODAY about the freeze on NIH Council Meetings and Study Sections. Emphasize that this means NO new grants are being funded & labs will soon start to shut down and fire employees. Phone numbers are at:

NIH indirects case update:

Hearing ongoing now, and I'll try to live tweet some notable exchanges.

Prior to more detailed arguments, Judge Kelley starts off with a few point questions to both sides:

I tend to mind my business on social media. I'm mostly here for gardening and LOTR memes. BUT, I've dedicated my life to science, and I feel it is existentially threatened. Not just science and research, but academia in general. (1)

Congrats to Dr. Sarah Hopp and team, thanks for allowing me to collaborate on your study! Her group is doing the hard work to test how microglia internalize tau to improve understanding of tau spread and pathology. #alzheimers #tau #microglia

Blanket advice to avoid acronyms/abbreviations/initialisms (protip: these are different..) should be more nuanced. Yes they can be confusing, but the full name may be irrelevant or, worse, misleading. So a description rather than an expansion may be better. For example: 1/2

💯 - Don't exhaust your audience with too much information. Give them threads they can follow through the talk. 🧪

A slide with multiple experiments and too much jargon is the presentation equivalent of a grant page with justified margins, no line breaks, and no figures. 😵‍💫

One of the most persistent and forceful critics was a neuroscientist from Stanford named Ben Barres.

He made it clear that he felt that many talented women had been overlooked and that the message that had been sent was tremendously damaging to fulfilling the NIH mission.
