The corporate world does this a lot during a company merger or company sale. They'll lay-off large quantities of staff to reflect a positive position to potential buyers.

I don't think it's that at all. I think CBS are prepping for a sale. For instance, the recent cancellation of the two FBI spin-off shows but keeping the original flagship show. This is typical manipulation of data to reflect profitability when going to market.
