Just published some work at Scientific Reports! We investigated visual adaptation following free viewing of a film (Casablanca) that had its oriented contrast altered. To our surprise, we found adaptation effects to be pretty negligible…

It’s a nice tactile addition to the well-known “pip-and-pop” phenomenon, extending it into more complex human-robot interaction environments.

Many thanks to @boracelebi.bsky.social, Julian Kaduk, @swarmdynamics.bsky.social, @kdrewing.bsky.social
Key findings:

- Even though the cues don’t say where, they help people find targets faster in visual scenes.

- The signals improve target identification in addition to helping with search.

Take home message: Brain seems to use brief alerting tactile signals to boost visual processing.

Eye movements are cheap, right? Not necessarily! 💰 In our review just out in @natrevpsychol.nature.com, Alex Schütz and I discuss the different costs associated with making an eye movement, how these costs affect behaviour, and the challenges of measuring this… rdcu.be/eAm69 #visionscience #vision

🗝️ Key findings:

* Lower amplitudes felt more pleasant and less arousing.
* Vibrations on the back were less arousing and more pleasant than on the front or both sides (front and back).
* The perceived intensity of vibration seems to play an important role in shaping emotional experiences.

1️⃣ Post-affective carry-over: neutral stimuli inherit temporal bias from preceding emotion
2️⃣ Low arousal → valence effect: positive > negative in perceived duration
3️⃣ High arousal → valence‐independent dilation
