Engineer. Artist. Dog dad. I love all things music and circuits! I keep it positive.

Putting FX on the Return tracks in Ableton is another easy level up! I was using insert FX on individual tracks and it created a lot of mud. Having your synths share a reverb helps them feel like they share a space and reduces unwanted noise and harmonic interaction 🤓
Why do I need every granular synthesizer ever made? Intellijel Multigrain got my mouth watering lately 🤤 #synthsky
...me to sing & focus on ambient music less 🤣
It's interesting when you start making art with an audience in mind. I've always just made stuff for me and not really shared it, but working on an EP now it feels important to wrestle with a few questions about intention and messaging! 🤔 This is mostly good news for my friends & family who want
Now I know what was missing from my mixes. It was glue! #synthsky
I spent 3 days of free time setting up this patch 😱 It was so satisfying finally laying down some takes of the idea I had rattling around my head! #synthsky #modular
I'm gonna be honest I mostly ignored compression FX until now 😱I come from an acoustic guitar background so my first instinct is to control the dynamics at performance time. But it really does help your mixes when used tastefully! #synthsky #dawlife
Seriously though, I'll always have a special place in my heart for teenage engineering! Music can be a really joyful thing and their instruments let you channel that so easily. What other instrument can make you laugh out loud like the cow effect on OP-1 while still having real depth? #synthsky
Love at first sight is real!
Life is full of inflection points. In hindsight, getting a pocket operator was definitely one of mine 🤣 #synthsky #gatewaydrug

Needed inspiration for how to layer acoustic guitar with harmonically dense synthesizer sounds. How could I forget this one!

On analog vs. digital synths I found early on in the development process that there is no fully digital synth. You need knowledge of analog circuits to properly scale signal gain in both domains, for example. Not to mention power circuits, CV and audio pre-A/D and post-D/A! #synthsky #diy
My favorite synths tend to combine analog and digital in unique ways. "Digital control, analog soul" as I've heard it. Brands like Make Noise, ALM, @intellijel.com, Mutable Instruments and so on! To me, #eurorack has a thriving hybrid scene and that's why all the best new instruments are there!
... to achieve sounds I like. I think in general I don't like "virtual analog" synths because despite the hype, they never do analog as well as analog. So then I want something that's super versatile and fun to program. What is out there like that? What uses DSP in new ways?
I really want to find a fully digital synth (not just a module) that I love but I haven't yet. I like Pigments as far as VSTs go, but for hardware I just haven't found one I enjoy programming 🤷‍♂️ The Hydrasynth gets hyped for its programming flow but I still find it more difficult than analog...
Honestly I probably should be syncing to Pam instead of passing it a clock. I wonder if some of my micro timing variation problems would go away 🤔
I mostly just want to easily sync my modular system without more external hardware! If I had a DC coupled output I could just use the Pam's Workout VST plugin. Currently I'm sending a MIDI clock to a spare synth and using its sync out to clock the modular. Latency is pretty small but does exist
My Focusrite audio interface has carried me farther than I imagined it would, but now I want to send CV and therefore want an interface with DC coupled outputs! The 4i4 has been perfect for my hobbyist needs, but the routing needs have lately grown more complex!
at this and these are just some thoughts I've had after lots of experimentation and being frustrated with my mixes!
... the main parts and will go up to -6 for increased loudness if necessary. I don't have a set guide for quiet parts but I try to experiment to get a sensitive response to low levels from the source while making sure not to to introduce noise. Noise will never fully get mixed out! I'm also newish
... quality happens at the sound design & recording stage. I've tried to hone in on some rules but really it boils down a lot to taste and effect. I try to record with a lot of dynamic range when possible, being slightly biased toward lower volume. As in, I typically shoot for -12dB peaks in ...
I'm finding there are lots of rules of thumb, but no set in stone laws. As I've gotten better at recording and mixing my music I've realized it's a pipeline and you have to maintain fidelity at every step, ESPECIALLY recording. You can always adjust the mix, not the recording. Lots of the sound ...
Try listening to your favorite music through your DAW sometime! Slap a frequency spectrum visualizer on there and take note of the shape. How does it evolve over time? Which ranges are prominent at the 'hooks' or important parts? Are the low and high end rolled off?
I'll never give up my hyperbolic dislike of MIDI though!
