This article captures the most current approach to teaching English Language Arts -snippets, excepts, and quantity over quality. The curriculum my district uses is the perfect example.

Had they merely read the summary, my students would have seen many of the same words, but they’d have lacked the feeling part.

Student choice is an important method of hooking students into their own learning.
However, when teacher autonomy is taken away (via a canned curriculum), student choice in how learning happens becomes lost.

The importance of kids choosing their own reading books can't be understated. I've always said that if improved test scores are the goal (& it seems to be) then we need to have kids read more.

A school wide culture of reading!

Instead we have a curriculum that assigns excerpts of chapters 🤮

This is always my advice, find a book that shows reading can be enjoyable!
Sometimes it takes trying a bunch of books you don't finish and THAT'S OKAY!
Finding answers to fix the literacy crisis
The reality is that there are problems at home, problems in schools, and problems in society that are making it harder for kids to be reading.
