S3 isn’t a database. But what if your lakehouse finally acted like one?

@jrdntgn.bsky.social shares why the current generation of lakehouse formats like Iceberg and Delta Lake might be missing the point—and how DuckLake, a new table format, changes the game.

here are the costs associated with the Oracle database, in case anyone doesn't know. the costs can go up further depending on other options 😅 this is why you need to stick with opensource databases such as pgsql 🥰 the amount of freedom FLOSS brings to individuals & small businesses is unmeasurable
delighted to support you and CMU!

Why use a semantic layer? 🤔

@ssp.sh shows how to build the simplest one with just:
⚡ YAML for metrics
⚡ Python + DuckDB + Ibis to query 20M NYC taxi records

You'll understand when it's useful and when it's overkill

that’s if you want the compute to happen in the cloud. if you just want local compute and aren’t worried about latency, then the blob store approach and HF are both great.
of course you should do a normal motherduck share allowing folks to create their own motherduck account and access with their own compute (free or paid).

you could do a read-only motherduck token but you’d get as much compute offered by a single account (if paid that can scale to many instances)
