1. Some manuscripts have real character.
They are often not the smartest, shiniest manuscripts, but rather the ones that have seen things. The manuscripts that have really been used (and abused). Today I spent the day with a very charismatic manuscript at the NLS, Edinburgh...🧵

The face of a woman from the 13th century (her wimple provides the date). Her smoothness shows she has been repeatedly touched - is she a saint or a holy woman? Graffiti from #NorwichCastle for #MedievalMonday

At Norwich Castle, where I heard a schoolteacher solemnly tell his pupils that a tunnel runs between the castle and the cathedral. Great to hear folklore being passed on in real life!

This is such brilliant archaeology. There's a bit of a persistent story that Britain was somehow culturally separate from europe in the Roman empire when it was so intertwined and connected by people and goods travelling.

When I arrived in the UK 25 years ago I had a job at a university that paid £21k. I could barely make ends meet but I worked hard and eventually I succeeded. I guess this Labour government considers young broke hardworking me a “taker”?

Fuck this.
This is so disgusting.

Reading 'Eleanor' by @historyalice.bsky.social and came on the story of Thomas Hardy's heart. Surely that's not true, I thought, but it seems it might. Bizarre and macabre. And typical of a cat!

In the cafe in Bath Place, Taunton, is this rather lovely C16 fireplace and ?C17 plaster ceiling. (The cafe owner says the building was a house fronting the High Street dating to the 1580s, now divided.)

The food is pretty good too!

Looks like thanks to a Christian charitable foundation, the triptych may remain on view in Sherborne somewhere.

The Finch ruling - which came about through Sarah's tireless campaigning - means that the environmental impact assessment of a fossil fuel project must include the emissions from all the fuel it produces, and not just the impact of the infrastructure itself

It's hugely important
Nooooo! Don't scrap the Finch ruling!

Keir Starmer may see them as part of “unnecessary red-tape, well-intentioned, but fundamentally misguided, environmental regulations” but the Finch ruling, Habitats Regulations, biodiversity net gain, etc, are vital protections for our planet and for nature.
2/2 🧵 However, the recommendations include a proposal to scrap the landmark Finch climate ruling and make changes to key green regulations.

Dear politicians,
Stop saying, "This is not who we are."
This is exactly who we are right now. It's your duty to help us defeat the fascists so we can stop being awful, which is what we are right now.
Thank you.

Vitré, Breizh, la Gare, for a stripy #WallsOnWednesday. Construction began in 1855 and was completed in 1857. The architect was Victor Lenoir. The station's location resulted in the demolition of the southern ramparts and the opening of north-south oriented streets. A medieval suburb disappeared.

A debate raged in the court of Qin 2,200yrs ago:

‘Important officials told the King of Qin: “People from [other] states who come to serve Qin merely travel here to cause dissension in Qin on behalf of their own rulers. We request the complete expulsion of aliens.”

Train driver. Worst question is, 'Why is your job so easy? You don't even have to steer!'
What’s the worst question someone can ask after you tell them your profession? For linguists, it’s definitely “how many languages do you speak?”, but I’m curious what else is happening to the rest of y’all out there?!
