Tonight I saw yet another nuanced and entertaining performance from Ben Mendelsohn, continuing a run of varied and well-crafted appearances stretching back over 15 years - all of which will once again be ignored by the Australian media so they can keep on making the same shit “Mendo” references

But to actually answer the question: I like Ram V but Black Tower: The Raven Conspiracy sounds like a CIA op designed to secure the loyalty of Gary Oldman fans who can’t decide if they liked him more as Sirius Black or as Smiley

It’s depressing just how badly the influence of Transmetropolitian is to this day still stinking up some dude-heavy corners of science fiction

Everything that's gone wrong in the 21st century can be traced back to Daryl
morrbeat.bsky.social
Nobody asked for Daryl to host Dancing with the Stars but we still got stuck with him for years
morrbeat.bsky.social
I don't think it's a bad movie as such, but there's nothing in it that would make people go to a cinema to watch it
morrbeat.bsky.social
And then after flogging a dead horse for way, way too long, eventually they stop because not only is it not going to happen they're ruining their chances of making anything else happen. So yeah, we still have Jared Leto as Skeletor in a He-Man movie (not a metaphor!) to look forward to
morrbeat.bsky.social
This is how pretty much how every "next big thing" currently works - corporations and billionaires decide we want something (that mostly benefits them) like a movie starring Jared Leto or, you know, AI or fascism, and they try to impose it top-down, because they're rich and therefore smart
morrbeat.bsky.social
One of the best ways to understand how society currently works is through big franchise movies like TRON: ARES - nobody wants them, everybody understands they're pushed on us by corporations that don't have a clue, the second we know they're shit we move on with our lives

Every song in every James Gunn movie and TV show sounds like a track Spinal Tap rejected for not reaching the high standards of ‘Break Like the Wind’

Give it another year or so and you can probably replace "Johnny Cash" with "just about everything creative out of the USA that isn't overtly anti-fascist"
teganoneil5000.bsky.social
of course Johnny Cash’ reputation is going to suffer precipitously: however unfair the association, he sang in a genre that has since been completely co-opted as the house arts organ of contemporary fascism. a lot of good musicians are going to be pushed aside and forgotten completely as a result.

I feel like this is going to be the fate of a lot of US creative work in general

This is a person we have discussed before! And no doubt will again in the near future

Usually it's both sad and frustrating to see people with talent get shut out, but there's always someone who's been acting like they've been driving up the emergency lane while everyone else is a chump and now they're pissed that the banked up traffic won't let them in
morrbeat.bsky.social
There's a certain pathway to online media "success", especially in Australia, that no longer leads to any kind of real success (largely because those with power have decided there's nothing in it for them) and it's always interesting to see how those on that path react when they realise it's over

I just never felt we needed any of the “before” plot - it was fine, but Heat never needed a prequel
morrbeat.bsky.social
There *is* a decent movie buried in HEAT 2, but the prequel stuff is just aimless nostalgia and self-indulgence and the sequel material - which is where Mann does make a case that it's a story worth telling - could do with an actual ending rather than a big sign saying TO BE CONTINUED
morrbeat.bsky.social
I want to see Mann do another crime movie as much as anyone, but HEAT 2 (if they follow the novel) is C-tier knock-off material that shows as much originality and inspiration as the first DEN OF THIEVES - and even that took the material in new directions with the sequel
morrbeat.bsky.social
Having read Michael Mann's 2022 novel HEAT 2, I reckon you can make an accurate movie version for whatever it costs to buy the editing software to create a mash-up of the Latin America stuff from the MIAMI VICE movie and two or three of the better episodes from the first season of CRIME STORY

Though realistically, no USA politician with any clout at all is going to be talking about healthcare or childcare or support for the elderly in the foreseeable future
morrbeat.bsky.social
Every time any US politician says helping people with some basic human need is too hard or isn’t possible, just remember how quickly they were able to put a fully fledged child-snatching Gestapo on the streets

After singing “Let MyGov open the door… to your benefits” for the last 15 minutes I am starting to see a flaw in my plan
morrbeat.bsky.social
Seriously don't know why MyGov hasn't done a cover of 'Let My Love Open the Door' for Centerlink hold music, I'm sure Pete Townshend would sign off on it
