A critical point occurs where the derivative of a function equals zero OR where the derivative is undefined, but there's an important catch: the critical point must exist in the domain of the original function. When a derivative equals zero at some x-value, that point is always a critical point because it indicates a horizontal tangent line where the function momentarily stops increasing or decreasing. For example, if f(x) = x² has f'(x) = 2x, then x = 0 is a critical point because the derivative equals zero there, and the original function is perfectly well-defined at x = 0.
However, when the derivative is undefined at a point, we can only call it a critical point if the original function itself is still defined there. This is the key distinction. If f(x) = |x|, the derivative is undefined at x = 0 (creating a sharp corner), but since f(0) exists, x = 0 is a critical point. In contrast, if you have h(x) = 4x²/(x² - 1), the derivative h'(x) is undefined at x = ±1 because of division by zero, BUT the original function h(x) is also undefined at those points—they're vertical asymptotes where the function shoots off to infinity. Since h(±1) doesn't exist in the first place, these cannot be critical points. Critical points must be actual points on the function's graph, not locations where the function fails to exist entirely.
