Day 6 and 7 - Dusk/Guarded/Dawn/Bare

'Despite the grave circumstances that put us on this journey, moments like this will be writ into my memory as some of the happiest I've ever known.'

The dusk had cast a palette of flame and mystery on the western face of Sohm Al. The scarlet and crimson of fading sunlight met with the haunting blue of the mountain's rich crystals, producing a scene that held Ahzuvi's attention captive—oblivious to Alphinaud's approach. The empty patch of grass beside her welcomed him, enticed him even. There was little question why he opted to share her company rather than sit through another argument on Ishgardian history; on any other journey, he would be elated to take part in such a debate. Clarifying a contentious history, and bringing about lasting peace after a millenia of war? If he wasn't so lost in his own mind, he would recognize the reason for the distraction for what it was. She was no longer 'his' warrior of light, who spent her waking moments fulfilling whatever plan he had come up with. She was now his closest friend, who had revealed to him a brilliant mind, gentle disposition, and a contagious sense of wonder about the world. But after their encounter with the primal Ravana, after Estinien rightfully chided him for putting Ahzuvi at risk /again/, something new gnawed at his chest with relentless persistence. The thought of losing her was unbearable, and he sought to express that still-nameless feeling somehow. "Mind if I sit with you?" "You may." Her response was one of warmth that put the spectacle of the sunset to shame. "I found something for you-" he announced boldly, forgetting every practiced dialouge he spent the day working on in his haste to hand his gift over. In his hand was a piece of crystal, and watched as her eyes fixated on it with a tangible curiosity. He could hear his heartbeat in his ear as he watched her hand reach up to his, fingers brushing his palm as she examined the stone. "...dravanian opal..." Her breath caught, her voice low enough it was only for him—at least, he would like to think of it that way. "You recognize it?" He picked it up from the mountainside some bells earlier, wanting to give her something to add to her collection of odd trinkets. He had no idea what it actually /was/, but now he was thanking each of the Twelve individually for the luck. "I do. It's a very beautiful sort of precious stone only found in Abalathian highlands..." It was endearing the way her fingers lingered on the stone, and he knew she was resisting picking it up entirely—she frequently needed explicit permission before accepting anything for herself. He nudged the rock into her hand, watching her eyes light up in awe. "Oh, it even has a flame!" She tilted the stone with a very precise angle so he could see, and sure enough the pale greens and blues flared with flecks of orange. "A beautiful one at that." "A flame?" His question was genuine, but more than anything he was just eager to hear her speak. Another charming development he'd discovered since the two had spent more time together was her passion for storytelling—something he had unintentionally overshadowed through his compulsive conversationalist habits. He once admitted a childish dream of his to one day visit Ishgard and see its faerie tale grandeur. She returned the favor by sharing her own childish dreams of chasing the sunset across the world, seeing all that Hydaelyn had to bear. "Some say these opals form when a dragon's flame melts the earth, and is recaptured within their tears." Ahzuvi glanced cautiously in the direction of Estinien and Ysayle, resuming only when she was satisfied they weren't close enough to overhear. "Or sometimes it's their blood, depending on who you ask..." "Were you to answer, which would you say?" "...Where I'm from, I learned the former. In truth, its formation is something much more mundane, but I still liked to believe the stories." "Correct me if I'm wrong—you're from Coerthas, but…I’ve noticed you don’t seem to harbor the same abhorrence of the dragons...?" He had been resisting the question, especially in the presence of their Ishgardian hosts. He wanted to sate his curiosity, and he wanted to know more about /her/, but he knew that anything related to her past was likely to be answered in vague terms. So he was surprised that she hesitated, and checked again to confirm their bickering companions weren’t nearby. It was the same defensiveness that he’d grown accustomed to—a guarded distance she had put up between herself and the world, but watched as it melted away when she returned her focus on him. “Not all of Coerthas faces the same ire of the dragons. Where I’m from, they were more of a fear than a foe. A lot of older towns still stood from before the war even began, older generations passing down different tales. Books that survived in family collections…” As the last of dusk’s light faded, Ahzuvi’s story had shifted to retellings of the verdant greens of a pre-Calamity Coerthas. Alphinaud was taken aback by how fondly she spoke of it—she painted a depiction of adventure worthy of the finest bardsongs, something she sounded even wistful for, enough that he was left wondering why she would be so averse to it. … She didn’t notice when exactly he fell asleep. The weight against her shoulder had been there for at least a full bell, but he was awake enough to be responding for a time. Realizing this, she settled again and fell back into silence, turning the opal over in her palm and examining every facet of its color. When armored footsteps approached, she looked up with mild irritation—even if he hadn’t been testing her patience today already, Estinien was an unwelcome visitor at this late hour. “At least our little lordling is sleeping, now.” Ahzuvi’s flat glare was cut off before she could respond, his tone softer this time. “But you should as well. I’m taking watch now. /You/ need rest.” “Didn’t realize I had a curfew.” “You do when you spend most of the day covered in toxic pollen and ochu acid.” She held no reservations arguing with the Azure Dragoon, but she didn’t have the energy or interest to bother this late at night. Nor did she want to wake Alphinaud. Ahzuvi accepted the defeat this time, and waited until Estinien had left before trying to settle in for the night. She easily could have carried Alphinaud back to their makeshift camp, but he seemed comfortable enough that she would feel bad moving him. The cold was another story. They didn’t keep a fire this night so as not to alert the resident dragons to their presence. As she was just starting to doze off while leaning back against him, she noticed the slightest tremors in his breath. His body followed moments later. Without hesitation, she risked waking him in an attempt to reposition—moving him to lay across her lap, giving herself room to lie down and curl her body just enough to guard his vitals from the frigid air. While not a roaring campfire, her body was always uncommonly warm even in the most bitter of snows. The shivering dwindled, and his body no longer tensed to conserve heat. Satisfied, she allowed herself a short nap. Long enough she wouldn’t have to hear from Estinien again. … Dawn illuminated the thick mist that curtained over the mountainside, and Alphinaud stirred when it became too bright to ignore. He froze when his eyes opened to Ahzuvi’s sleeping face only ilms away from him. The rest of his senses caught up, and he was keenly aware of how close they both were. She must have fallen asleep at some point…/he/ must have fallen asleep at some point, and that was embarrassing enough his face burned under a tinge of pink. More importantly than his wandering thoughts to their proximity, though, was noticing that her head was resting against solid, cold stone. Without second thought, he reached his arm out and carefully worked his hand to serve as a makeshift pillow for her. She didn’t wake, and he returned to slumber with the quietest sigh of relief. Of adoration.

It was almost insulting how clear the skies were this morning - the sun gracefully cresting the peaks, casting all of the highlands in warm light after such a bitter storm. As if the blizzard had never even happened, though the glittering banks of snow across the settlement would prove otherwise. It would make his search a little easier, at least. He hadn't expected to find her, let alone have a chance to try and apologize to her...but his heart lifted when she did not rebuke his approach. Instead, those sharp eyes fixed on him - what greeted him wasn't well-deserved anger, but something rather difficult to put a name to. It was an uncertainty. A vulnerability. He hesitated, leaving a cautious distance between them rather than approach. He had tested her patience far enough these last several weeks. Moons would be more accurate, but even considering that fact made his chest ache. The silence hurt the most, though. She was never the easiest for him to read, but he knew well enough that her usually calm demeanor masked a sharp and temperamental mind. This was not the silence of someone who had nothing to say. This was the silence of someone who had too much to say. He risked stepping closer. For all of his worries, she DID save him. She had carried him back to shelter, a warm bed, and safety. A flush crept across his ears as he recalled the moment he finally woke in the middle of the night, Tataru offering him a warm drink and a stern bit hushed scolding for his carelessness. It almost got him killed, and the warrior of light once again shouldered him (quite literally this time) back to sanctuary. She was so worn out, his bed was not entirely his - she had passed out shortly after setting him down, not even having enough energy to find a better place to sleep. He was thankful that the cold would be an easy explanation should the red in his cheeks be noticed. The image would be certain to remain in his mind for a long time to come - a sleeping Ahzuvi curled over the edge of the bed, one arm over him and her face buried against his side. For his own sake, he had decided not to mention he saw that. He had little doubt that it would make their already tense companionship worse. ... He could feel her eyes on him still, but the silence stretched on. His throat was dry, like anything he wanted to say was sapped away, leaving him wanting to wither away to nothing in that moment. He couldn't bear to look at her again, to meet her gaze. Even if the quiet felt as strained as a drawn bowstring, her company felt familiar and comforting. He would take every moment he could get... moments that could on the surface feel like everything was back to normal. So when the heavy air was broken with her voice first, he about jumped out of his skin from the surprise. Shock quickly gave way to bewilderment once he processed what she had said. "I'm glad you're alright." "I am too. Glad that you are well, I mean." It wasn't much, and she quickly withdrew again, but again he was pleasantly surprised to see she continued to permit his company. Her eyes drifted off to the western road, where the Gates of Judgment stood in the distance. He couldn't help but follow her gaze. He frowned, shame and embarrassment biting at his very soul. It wasn't that far, and seemed a mostly straightforward journey...how did he manage to get so lost that she needed to come find him? Logically he understood - Coerthan blizzards are dangerous, capable of blinding a man to the nose on his own face, and sweeping snow across the valleys in drifts tall enough to cover a goobbue. Emotionally, he just was glad Alisaie wasn't here to tease him for it - she would be right to, even. Oh gods, Alisaie. He hadn't thought about what she would do if and when she learns of this. She and Ahzuvi had become such good friends. She would kill him if she found out how he'd been treating Ahzuvi all this time - last night included. ... "I'm sorry." He felt his heart skip multiple beats, and finally he looked up at the warrior of light with a curiosity writ plain on his face - and found Ahzuvi's crystal blue eyes meeting his once again. He didn't have time to respond. Or maybe he did, but was so caught off guard that he wasted that time processing her comment. But by the time he opened his mouth to say something, she was speaking again. "For all of this. I'm just... I'm sorry." He watched that indescribable emotion flicker and fade, hearing that same vulnerability in her voice. "I shouldn't have left you alone like that. I grew up in Coerthan winters, but I didn't-...it was careless of me." His face must have said everything his voice could not - she continued, not needing his commentary to encourage her further. "I don't-..." she hesitated, her brows knitting together as she had to look away to piece her thoughts. "I don't want anyone else to get hurt because of me." Quieter, almost a whisper that he would have missed if he wasn't giving her his undivided attention. "...I can't lose you, too." ... Ahzuvi was not known to share certain parts of her life, leaving a noticeable gap in her stories whenever discussion would turn those directions. Only Thancred had supposedly pieced together even a vague idea, and those were thoughts he would never share with any of the Scions. But Alphinaud listened with rapt attention as she spoke with an open heart, and a surprising gentleness towards him. "I'm no stranger to losing everything. And I know how it feels - what you are feeling. That guilt, the responsibility. But you are here...we are here, and maybe we have a chance to fix things. But if you weren't here...I don't know what i would need to do. You make things better. You try to fix the broken, and right now the Scions are very broken." "...but you are also my friend." "So I can't lose you, too."

the night before they part the rising stones for good

"You're still awake." It isn't a question. Alphinaud knows better than to ask, the girl in front of him well known to stay awake into the witching hour. "I am." Amaris replies, her fingers trailing across the worn wood of the bar. She is still dressed in her day clothes, a sign that she had not yet returned to her quarters — the bar stool beneath her rear her resting location of choice. "You should really try warming it up." His hands point to the cool glass of milk beside her, condensation coating its walls. "Mother always said warm milk is quite the useful sleeping aid." He adds with a soft smile. Amaris' hands wrap around the cup, her eyes downcast into the liquid. "I'm not trying to sleep though. If I sleep, then our last night here is truly over." She says, her words blowing soft ripples into the milk. "I want this night to last as long as possible." There is a silence between them. A vulnerability. "Are you really not afraid of what tomorrow will be?" Amaris asks, her voice in a whisper. Alphinaud takes a seat next to her, his body twisted so that he can give full attention to her. He knows better to turn the question back on her. To ask if she is afraid of tomorrow. "There will always be nerves when doing something new..." He offers in reply — an unintentional soft diplomatic pleasantry “...Garlemald will be a challenge, but Alisaie and I are resolved to try." The addition is more honest than what preceded it yet he can tell by the way her eyes peer at him, it isn't the answer she was looking for. "I wish that I had some great calling. Something to fill my days while you all are off doing things that, hopefully, will make you happy." She replies with zero pretense. "My parents are excited for me to come home but I won't lie and tell you that I'm excited to be right back where I started." Amaris' words are accented by a breathless laugh, shockingly genuine despite the circumstances. Alphinaud pauses to fully hear her words. To understand her meaning. Invite her to join you in Garlemald is what his mind screams at him For her to be surrounded by constant reminders of when her body was stolen from her? He screams back as the scene of her crumpled body in the snow flashes in his mind. "It is merely a well deserved respite. You will be off doing everything you could ever wish for ere long." Alphinaud replies, kind intention and encouragement dripping from each syllable. She turns her head to him for the first time since he took his seat - the beginnings of a pout on her lips. Those same lips open, a breath taken in sharply as if she intends to speak something of great import. When his eyes connect with her own, he notices the way that resolve drops — slightly in a way that she likely believes he did not notice. "Will I hear from you often?" Amaris asks, pulling her drink up to her lips. "Linkshell or letter...doesn't matter which." She clarifies, the sound reverberating off the inside of the cup. "Everyday if you'd wish it." He replies faster than he intends. He cannot be mad at it, not when he sees the beginning of a smile pull at her lips. "Consider it my wish, then." Amaris simpers, a flush on her cheeks that mirrors his own. Their bodies are closer than he believes either of them realized, a subconscious lean that brings their upper bodies towards one another like a magnet. "Alphinaud..?" Her voice is barely above a whisper yet it pulls him in like a siren song. Against his lips is the ghost of her breath, and he feels as if he'll fall from the barstool. The part of him that screamed for him to invite her to Garlemald is screaming for him to kiss her. To put a title to what they were — to what he deep down knows they both wish to be. He doesn't listen. "You must be tired." He whispers, his body still unmoving. "You should sleep. Let me walk you to your chambers." The words have no ulterior motives, care at the forefront of his mind. Alphinaud forces himself from his seat and extends a hand to her in a gesture that comes naturally to him. Her eyes trail from his open palm and up his arm, finding their mark in his eyes — he swears that levin followed the trail. Wordlessly, she takes his hand and he maneuvers it into the crook of his arm. Were the rest of the Scions to be present, there would be doubtless comments on either the intimacy or the old fashioned nature of the gesture. He is thankful they aren't present, selfishly pulling her closer to his side as they take their last walk down the halls of The Rising Stones — their home.
