Learning’s a light.

Gave each of my kids a tea light as they walked in on day one this year.

I asked them to imagine it as their learning and to have it on their desk each day to cherish and nurture.

It also serves as a signal for readiness—on or off.

Light the way. 🙂

Instead of standards-based, try growth-based.

It does not remove the standard from the work.

Indeed, we need the standard.

But it does move the focus to the learner, whose growth is the work.

Words set the mind.

Seems one of those “good ideas” we have without really having any idea of why we’re really doing it.

At its “least worst,” it reveals the folly of age grouping.

At its “most worst,” it perpetuates subjective gatekeeping.

We can do better.

I used to think teaching was assigning and grading the work.

Now I believe it is framing and supporting the work.
