I'm not sure I agree, I've interrogated my own "shadow" and I don't see any similarities to just about anyone.
Then again I've also done work to accept the darker parts of myself even if I don't necessarily indulge in them, so maybe that's why.

just some general thoughts i've been having

Perhaps by nature, we naturally assume others to be similar to ourselves. To a liar, everyone is a liar. Everyone is trustworthy to an honest child. To a businessperson, money matters to everyone. To a monk, money may have no value at all.
This is, I think, the most primal reason why we fail to relate to one another. On some fundamental level we cannot understand others outside of ourselves. So instead we invent ideas of what another person is, how they think, etc.
Even when you try to relate as much as possible, you can find limits of real understanding.
As a bisexual non-binary, I cannot really understand someone who is exclusively attracted to one type of person, neither can I really relate or understand the idea of Being a man or woman in any actual sense. I understand masculinity and femininity (somewhat) but gender itself tends to be alien to me.

Of course, I can intellectually know and understand that others are different. But it is the true understanding of another person that may be beyond us.

I may be wrong here of course, maybe there is a point at which you can truly understand and relate, but I think this is at least the natural state.
