The short version: the Gzdoom team has finally had enough of Graf Zhal's shit (including but not limited to pushing AI code into Gzdoom).

The entire team has packed up and made a new fork of Gzdoom.

So while there's no Romancing SaGa, Shin Megami Tensei or Front Mission, here's a book which took me a year to write instead of one that took quadruple the time. While many of those SFC games have been re-released since the mid-'90s, my series focuses on original releases.
Perhaps someday you'll be able to read a Definitive Book of Super Famicom RPGs, and I would love to be its author, but for now, we must content ourselves with official translations and releases for the Western Super Nintendo, an impressive array of some of the best-received RPGs of all time.

What if the details of its story and the tapestry of its history were enough to make it an honorary Final Fantasy? I've earned a little infamy for this. Hear me out. It's a new way to make an attempt at understanding Chrono Trigger in a wider context.
The buts show up right away. But what about Mana? But what about Final Fantasy Adventure? But what about the SaGa series, a.k.a. The Final Fantasy Legend 1, 2 and 3? But what about Bravely Default, Xenogears, Lost Odyssey or Octopath Traveler?
All intriguing cases in their own right, whether due to regional naming conventions and awkward localisation or to the status of spiritual successor and/ or spinoff. Clearly, it's a big minefield to navigate but this is uniquely about Chrono Trigger and its position in gaming history.
The others can have their own essays written by more interested writers.
