Hi #Skystorians! I log out for the weekend and come back to find that *everyone* has migrated over... I'm a historian of emotion, gender, business, and politics in the US. You'll likely see me posting about history, teaching, football, & basketball! 🗃

"and the resulting gap between constitutional promise and governing power has echoed ever since in how we contest belonging, protection, and punishment." 2/2

Everything we've been discussing has really come together for my students in the last week, & it's amazing to see

"If success means redefining the American political community, who counts, on what terms, and under whose authority, then Reconstruction succeeded; but if success means building the institutional will and durable coalitions needed to defend that redefinition against organized backlash, it failed "1/

"This week’s lesson on Reconstruction challenged the narrative of “revolutionary possibility” with
its collapse"

I MEAN, Y'ALL.

I asked them to think about whether Reconstruction was a success or a failure, and, y'all, these reflections are GOOD

Me, when my first year students start to use their weekly journals to bring together stuff we discussed earlier this semester and talk about the difference between law on the books and law on the ground

Hopefully in the next week, I'll get some major writing goals finally crossed off my list!

So, a quick thank you post for my amazing writing group -- @lindstorian.bsky.social, @carolineegrego.bsky.social, & Juliet Larkin-Gilmore! Weekly writing (& venting) sessions have truly sustained me
mlcooper.bsky.social
With *waves hand* everything going on, writing has been difficult. BUT, the last few weeks I've finally figured out how to address a few stumbling blocks (including one that I've been trying to wrangle for literally 2 years) & am finally feeling energized for writing again.

Attending the annual meeting? Be sure to check out the Public Square in the book exhibit. We've got lots of great programming throughout the conference!

YES! It's not just performing either. When I'm teaching, I use what I think of as my professor persona-- it's part evangelist, part comedian, & part my normal self.

The other aspect of this is the huge emotional labor involved--we still have to perform even if it's a bad day for whatever reason

- he also is backtracking on how he used to be jealous about how faculty members weren’t on campus all the time. He said I only taught two classes and now I’m exhausted. It’s like “performing.” Not to mention all of the prep time before and the grading after that happens off campus sometimes.

This thread is fantastic

I am fascinated by this guy who was a Higher Ed administrator and has now moved into teaching classes as a faculty member. He is documenting his whole journey on TikTok. Over the summer, he had so much excitement 🧵

Faculty and admins should play Freaky Friday at least once in their careers. It’s not easy either way

On my first day, I had a lecture hall full of outraged students when they found out I was a Duke fan 😂😂

Today is August 1.

Asking an academic how their book is going is a felony.
