Today I learned about Gerhard Munthe, who, in the early 20th century, designed some extremely Atari-looking tapestries with titles like "Blood Tower"

"Paul, we're doing an article about data compression techniques. We just need something that illustrates compressing data." "Say no more, Cliff."
A splash page from the October 1993 issue of Compute magazine. Floating in a vaporwave plane, in the center of a piece of graph paper, a giant ebony floating head is quadrated off; but is missing the pieces in the center. Around the head is the number 4, a triangle, the symbol for pi, a mouse cursor, and various lines of navigation. Behind the head is a sunset. Into the head's open hole flies a microchip, a semicirclular prism, a pole, and a chessboard.
It was also included in the spooky MIST1023 artpack collection release two years ago this month. "We have such sights to demo for you"
Mistigram: this portrait of #Hellraiser's Cenobite #Pinhead, titled "Solve the Cube", was drawn by @polyducks.co.uk and El Hombre Lombre for the Flash Party demoparty (coming up again in a bit over a week), whose #ANSIart compo it took second prize in.
A pale bald man with pins driven into his head from all angles grimaces in the darkness as he sparks a flash of light by rotating a Rubix cube he holds in his hands into completion.
Mistigram: this #monochrome #teletext portrait of the late #GeneWilder as the titular character in Mel Brooks' 1974 #YoungFrankenstein was drawn by @horsenburger.bsky.social and included in the spooky MIST1024 artpack collection released one year ago this month.
A moustached man with wild hair and eyes wearing a stethoscope exclaims under dramatic lighting that it's alive!

In college we used PINE on VAX terminals to send text based emails. The space bar would go to the next page in an email. The font was fixed sized & monitor was a set number of characters. You could make animated ASCII art the way flip books used to work by holding the space bar to flip pages.
Mistigram: this #teletext scene of a spooky mansion was drawn by @pixelblip.bsky.social and included in the, again, spooky MIST1019 artpack collection released six years ago this month.
The tall towers of a very spooky, yet oddly rainbow-striped, stately country house reach into the foggy sky on a moonlit night.
Mistigram: this glitchy image by the pixelmancer artist formerly known as 192.168.10.13 bears the mild title "out of touch", but visually resonates with boundaries thinning during the change of the seasons. It was included in our spooky MIST1020 artpack collection released five years ago this month
Against a sky halfway between a vaporwave sunset and the glow of desert fallout, a darkened human figure steps toward the viewer between a series of colour-inverting tall rectangles.
Mistigram: one person's composition is another tribunal's evidence of war crimes. This artfully-arranged ##PETSCII pyramid of human skulls is the handiwork of @littlebitspace.bsky.social, resonant with his deck of skeletal Tarot cards. It was included in the spooky MIST1022 artpack.
If you take your time and are mindful of their centres of gravity, you can balance a human skull in the space between two other human skulls, nested in the gaps between three lower human skulls.
Mistigram: this #PETSCII screen, drawn by Bema, depicts a hideous Lovecraftian creature - the piece is called The Deep Ones - slithering out of the ocean like an angry jar of thawed frozen chopped spinach. It was included in the spooky MIST1021 artpack collection released four years ago this month.
One small step for sea life, one giant leap for batrachian-kind.

The babies of Mortal Kombat II
Mistigram: Atonalosprey drew this #teletext portrait of an ominous #fortuneteller conferring with the other side in her #crystalball. This screen was included in the spooky MIST1023 artpack collection released two years ago this month.
A dramatically-lit fortune teller in exotic garb peers low over her glowing crystal ball, looking for possibilities and fates.
Mistigram: Darkman Almighty loves his television series, and in a rare departure from his Star Trek wheelhouse drew this moody #ANSIart tribute to Joss Whedon's late '90s #BuffyTheVampireSlayer series. This screen was included in last year's spooky MIST1024 artpack collection.
Fog gathers behind a wrought-iron gate. Above it all looms a full moon at top right and a Buffy logo at top left.
Mistigram: If you dig blood & guts for Halloween, put away the slasher flick & fire up the medical imaging. Nick Lakowski painted this cross-section of an incidentaloma, an unexpected tumour encountered while looking for something else. It was included in the MIST1017 artpack.
A cluster of living structures, interconnected with passages and openings, floats in a liminal organic space like a tiny SF squatter settlement in an interdimensional space.
Mistigram: @horsenburger.bsky.social drew this ##teletext portrait of ##the10000VoltGhost from Watt A Shocking Ghost, S1E4 of the ##ScoobyDoo Dynomutt hour, first aired in Oct 1976. This screen was included in the spooky MIST1018 artpack collection released 7 years ago.
A humanoid figure with only very vague facial features glows orange and yellow with the power of electricity.

Mistigram: this illustration by AFlamingoCup appears to be making a comment on the ethical and principled behaviors of priests (or at least _these_ priests), and it's not a positive one. This piece was included in the spooky MIST1020 artpack collection released five years ago.
If there is an opposite of holiness, these two dark haloed and horned figures in the archway wearing liturgical vestments are it.
Mistigram: when he drew #AbrahamLincoln for his #DeadPresidents series, Atonalosprey couldn't imagine that in 2025 he'd be actively pulling his mouldering remains out of the grave to weigh in on the triumph of the mobocratic spirit. This piece was included in the spooky MIST1022 artpack.
I've heard him described as lean, gaunt, thin and haggard, but this is ridiculous.
Mistigram: this ##teletext portrait of the ##Phantasm horror movie series' antagonist ##theTallMan, as played by the late ##AngusScrimm, was drawn by @horsenburger.bsky.social and included in the spooky MIST1023 artpack collection two years ago this month!
A spooky long-haired old man in a suit grimaces at the viewer, surrounded by sinister floating bladed chromed spheres.
Mistigram: Memento te mori means Remember you must die, & mortality is sure on the mind of the person looking in this mirror. @littlebitspace.bsky.social won 1st place with it in the ##PETSCII compo at last year's @flashparty.ar ! It was also included in the spooky MIST1024 artpack collection
In front of the calligraphed words Memento Te Mori, a person stands in front of a mirror and sees their skeleton looking back at them.
and OK last one, JaZz's original was special but Sidewinder's remix of his Night of the Living Hoovers has some great big beat sound: mistigris.org/newmedia/mis...

And while we're on a EuphoniX bender, nothing can compete with the musical anarchy of "Inherit the Stars" by JaZz, this is the music I played loud to let my parents know I was in a bad mood: mistigris.org/newmedia/mis...
