Learn and appreciate the history and culinary side of cardamom in Guatemala. We always enjoy it at Kaffe Kardamomuss, the restaurant in Coban that uses the spice in all its cuisine and pastries. Simone Cormier leads the tour on YouTube. www.bing.com/videos/searc....
My daughter led a group, including our grandkids, to the #NoKings rally at the Arizona State Capitol Saturday. She appreciated seeing frogs were also demanding NO KINGS! She did express one regret, "Such terrorists and agitators! I missed the table to pick up my paycheck for protesting, though." 🤣
I found a book and a podcast which explain some of the underlying causes/motivations for yesterday's No Kings Day protest, which at 7 million people--a diverse group--took their day off to protest authoritarianism, immigration & deployment of federal troops. markdwalker2.substack.com/p/preparing-...
I joined fellow board member Daniel Dickenson at the Arizona Authors Association booth, which is part of the Desert Nights Rising Stars Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing Conference at ASU. Spiffy pens and information folders were among the tchotchkes for potential new members.
Poet Laureate/Director of the Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing Alberto Rios and keynote speaker Sandra Cisneros reflect on the role of the writer/artists during the time of book banning and threats to our freedom of expression--Sandra ended the day with an inspiring, new poem.
I dropped by Antigua Books on our latest visit to Guatemala to see my book and meet the owner, Troy. They have an outstanding selection of books in English and Spanish.
Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression. This right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference to seek, receive and impart information. END OF STORY. #BannedBooksWeek#humanrights#penamerica#millionmilewalker
This book is both a wonderful recounting of stories about Walker’s travels and experience in Guatemala, and a substantial anthology of the best writers—who have written their own experiences and information about this magnificent, troubled Central American country. Nancy H. Marshall, author
My latest review of a book from one of my favorite Returned Peace Corps Volunteer writers. He celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative power of second chances. The Passionate Sister, by John Thorndike (El Salvador, 1966-68) open.substack.com/pub/peacecor...
One of the benefits of downsizing is reviewing papers from all the great NGOs I've worked with over the years like Plan, CARE & MAP International, Food for the Hungry, Make A Wish, Heart Beat International, Global Brigages, Bridges to a Common Ground. I miss the camaraderie but not the pressure...
I began reading this book today. The son of a former Catholic nun and a Franciscan brother—Fugelsang frames Christianity not as a tool for domination but as a call to uplift the poor, welcome the stranger, and care for the despised. #christianvalues
Spanglish: Cuando you can't find la palabra en un idioma, so you fill it in con la otra. Speaking in several languages at the same time expands the number of people we can connect with--and keeps your mind nimble as you grow older!
🌴🎬 This was the first major American film shot in Cuba since 1959. His wife, Joley Richardson, is the daughter of Vanessa Redgrave and granddaughter of Sir Michael Redgrave, making her part of the same dynasty as Laurence Olivier. And Mariel Hemingway--the actual granddaughter-- makes a cameo.
"Paco" Villagran Kramer led a civil ceremony for our marriage, and then we celebrated with Ligia's family members and friends, "Just the immediate family," I was told. Over 80 people attended, I recognized 8 of them. A fellow RPCV lent me his suit jacket and a tie! 1973 (The Scanning Project).
Buenos Dias! "Paco" Villagran Kramer married Ligia & me in the early '70's in Guatemala. He was a personal friend of Ligia's father. He was elected VP in 1978, but resigned in 1980 due to Guatemala's Human Rights abuses. The Scanning Project. #guatemala502#HumanRightsWatch#millionmilewalker
"...Thanks for that great blurb." A word of thanks for my blurb and review of his new book. "A luminous novel of recovery." Kirkus Review "A marvel of imagination and creativity." US Review of books. #bookreviewer#bookrecommendations#millionmilewalker
Check out my Peace Corps experience video in Guatemala at the bottom of my website, which has added relevance with the proposed Peace Corps Modernization Act. This brings the PC under the State Department's priorities, which is what our founders wanted to avoid.
A grad of Evergreen, I was saddened by the killings. But as Charlie Kirk said, "I think it's worth it...to have a cost of unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year so that we can have the Second Amendment to protect our other God-given rights." #guncontrolwww.denverpost.com/2025/09/10/e...
After visiting the Seeds program in Chocolá Guatemala I entered my new role as a member of the Executive Committee of their board. As we gear up for our campaign to strengthen and expand our work combating hunger and malnutrition with our team. #guatemala502#Seedforafuture#millionmilewalker
Just another triple digit temp type of day. What's it like in Phoenix for those outside 24/7 when the temperature hits 117 degrees? Asphalt hits 180 degrees, and 20% of the deaths of the Arizona Burn Center are homeless. See today's NY Times. #arizonaliving#homelessness#millionmilewalker
Here's my initial blurb on John Thorndike's latest, which he included at the beginning of his book, "John Thorndike confronts grief by reimagining his mother's life beyond her premature death from addiction at 57. I highly recommend it! 👍 #bookreviewer#bookrecommendation#millionmilewalker
