A group of residents near one of Drax’s US wood pellet facilities have filed a lawsuit against Drax Biomass and its subsidiaries, alleging that the facility “unlawfully” released “massive amounts of toxic pollutants into their community”.

Two private schools in Yorkshire which closed down this year had suffered years of financial problems prior to the removal of VAT exemptions, and owed a combined total of just under £6m when they collapsed, analysis of financial documents has revealed.

Around 2,000 people were thought to have previously worked on the mine – latest figures from Anglo American put the figure at around 1,100.

The project has been the source of a lot of uncertainty since it was announced last year that development on it would be slowed.

Anglo American’s CEO said in July last year, however, that there was a “good chance” the mine will be operational by 2030.
