As things become more bleak, I hope this paper might offer a way to frame what's happening. What's been happening from the start. This was a nugget of an idea I had almost 4 years ago & I'm happy it was published last month in a special post-Dobbs issue of American Studies. 1/

It must be an incredible feeling to be a white man like @ezrakleinbot.bsky.social and say with your whole chest that we should vote for people who disagree with our very existence or right to bodily autonomy to win elections. To not acknowledge the absolute oppression of that is astonishing.

The most clarifying thing to come out of this conversation is the utter lack humanity toward the Palestinian people & the seeming infallibility of the Jewish state. It seems incomprehensible to Segal that generations of living under apartheid conditions could be what fuels anger & violence.
Today’s episode of The Ezra Klein Show.

Amit Segal on why most Israelis don’t see the ceasefire as the end of the war between Israel and Hamas and how this conflict is mapping onto Israeli politics—both at present, and as the country looks toward its next elections.

I’ve NEVER been as judged for the tone of my voice the way I’ve been in academia. By peers, students, administrators - my “tone” seems to be an issue. And I don’t know what to say. This is just my voice? I don’t know why I have to change the way I’ve sounded for 50 years to make you comfortable. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Loved today’s rainbow, Pride-themed Strands from @nytgames.bsky.social. Very cute! But honestly a bit hard to take when their parent org, @nytimes.com is so consistently wretched to trans folks. If it’s a small act of rebellion, good for them. But the Times ed board needs to get 👏🏼 it 👏🏼 together.

I am so tired of managing the feelings of middle-aged men. If it’s going to be required of me at work, put it in my job description and fucking pay me for it.
June 16, 2025 at 10:04 PM
No. This is a feckless excuse that Dems can use when they shit the bed during the midterms next year. We can both fight this bullshit AND stand up good candidates to take back the House and make gains in the Senate. But only if the party leaders get off their asses and DO SOMETHING.
Chris Murphy: "We can't be preparing for the 2026 election. It might not come. All of our focus right now has to be on protecting the democracy, about stopping the corruption."

Today’s email from The Chronicle is an ad for a talk on “viewpoint diversity” with Steven Pinker.

Yes, because who better to talk about the importance of diverse views than a 70-year old white man with a PhD?

I really miss the days when people didn’t feel the need to have full conversations on their cell phones in every waiting room. I’m at the salon to RELAX, Susan. Not hear about your frustrating day with Antoinette. 🙄

I don’t know who’s in charge of these things, but can someone film the current cast of Cabaret on Broadway so we can just memorialize Orville Peck in this role? I didn’t think anyone would be as good as Alan Cumming, but Peck is OUTSTANDING.

Here’s a wild fucking idea: we could just treat trans people like human beings.

Someone said to me, regarding the poor management skills of a man we work with: “But remember, he’s a guy, and they’re just not as good at these things.”

I am so tired of this excuse. Stop letting men off the hook for their lack of communication and emotional intelligence.

FUCKING STOP IT

The absolute lack of value that universities have for any labor not attached to a terminal degree is appalling. Yet the institutional barriers to getting that terminal degree are often insurmountable. And they wonder why the general opinion of higher ed is sinking.
May 27, 2025 at 10:28 PM
I know universities are under a lot of pressure right now, but they could also try not treating their employees like garbage. It would be good to have a loyal & uplifted workforce when we come out the other side of this, rather than one seething with spite & ready to flee at the first opportunity.

The greatest scam ever perpetrated on society is that women are too emotional to lead. The fact that peri/menopausal women—who are in a constant low-level rage—aren’t stabbing people on a daily basis should be proof that we’re in more control than men.

I have what I think is a great business proposal for hotels: offer early check IN. Charge $100, $150 - enough to make it worth your while to flip a room quickly. Because nothing’s worse than getting to the west coast at 9am & having to kill 6 hours when you’ve been up since 3am EST. 😴😴😭😭

Really love the concept of period undies, especially during the crazy days of #perimenopause. Would love it if they felt a tiny bit less like a diaper. 🫣

Remember back in the day when we used to call customer service and get transferred to agents in India & our uppity American asses would complain because we couldn’t understand their accents. hahaha. Have you tried having a conversation with a AI BOT lately? How’s that going?

One thing that has always bothered me about the #MCU is the ratio of violence:sex. Hear me out: if I have to watch #kingpin squelch a man’s head w his bare hands, I should at least get to see #daredevil have some sexy time with literally ANYONE. Girl, guy, I don’t care - just more than we get now!

Nothing prepares you for a parent with Alzheimer’s, and the work of supporting your other parent/primary caregiver. But what makes it worse is a sibling who refuses to acknowledge or accept where we are and is constantly in a snit about *everything*. 😐

After 54 years of marriage, my mom needs a copy of her marriage license, because ironically, although the government uses the Bible to tell us how to live, the signed marital certificate from the priest “doesn’t count” as documentation for the Real ID she’ll need to continue voting. 🙄
Millions of Americans "don’t have ready access to the kinds of documentation that the SAVE Act ... [would] require for voting," such as a birth certificate or passport, Jasleen Singh told @votebeat.org. Just look at what happened in New Hampshire:
New Hampshire election offers a preview of the barriers posed by SAVE Act
Voters and election officials around the country should pay close attention to how the state’s new proof of citizenship law affects voters, because one way or another, they could be contending with si...

I know that many university presidents & trustees probably think they’re protecting themselves & their students by rolling over on DEI and gender issues. But they’re not. They’re just emboldening this administration to further terrorize marginalized students.

What - and I say this with my full chest - IN THE FUCK?

Authoritarianism isn’t coming. It’s fully here.
Video of the international student at Tufts being arrested by "federal authorities" in Massachusetts has been released and it's terrifying.

They're not even uniformed officers. Just secret police thugs in hoodies and masks.

The way that R1 universities are just rolling over and complying with these anti-DEI orders is really something. They’re acting like they don’t have any political or social capital, when what they actually lack is a goddamn spine.

I know we all need to find joy where we can, so we just got tickets to see Orville Peck in Cabaret, and John Mulaney & friends in Portland, Maine. Everything is terrible, but live theater and comedy soothe the soul.
