Quite a bit of eyewall lightning can be observed in hurricane Melissa. Due to slow motion of the hurricane, one can easily make out the eyewall by plotting one hour's worth of data. Here's one of such display in motion:

The latest update from the NHC still has Hurricane Melissa at category 5 with 1 minute average winds up to 270 km/h. The hurricane is still crawling westwards, but is expected to make a turn towards Jamaica later today or tonight.

With the hurricane currently moving at walking speed, the impacts will be prolonged - storm total rainfall in Jamaica could go into four digit millimetre territory. The slow movement is shown well by this animation of 3 hours of satellite data.

The sun has risen on a monster. Hurricane Melissa is now a category 5 hurricane with maximum 1 minute average winds up to 260 km/h, expected to turn towards Jamaica and make landfall there on Tuesday, possibly as the strongest in Jamaica's history.

Hurricane Melissa's intensification has levelled off for now and it is an extremely dangerous category four hurricane. It continues to move slowly, meaning prolonged impacts for the affected areas.

Hurricane Melissa has now rapidly intensified into a category 4 hurricane and could reach category 5. The messaging from the NHC is not mincing words, especially with regard to Jamaica, which needs to seek shelter now.

Key Messages:

1. Jamaica: Seek shelter now(highlighted by the poster). Damaging winds and heavy rainfall
today and on Monday will cause catastrophic and life-threatening
flash flooding and numerous landslides before the strongest winds
arrive Monday night and Tuesday morning. Extensive infrastructural
damage, long-duration power and communication outages, and isolation
of communities are expected. Life-threatening storm surge is likely
along portions of the southern coast Monday night and Tuesday
morning.

2. Haiti: Catastrophic and life-threatening flash flooding and
landslides are expected across southwestern Haiti through midweek,
likely causing extensive infrastructural damage and isolation
of communities. Although winds are temporarily decreasing on the
Tiburon peninsula, they could increase again across much of western
Haiti on Tuesday.

3. Dominican Republic: Heavy rainfall through midweek could produce
catastrophic flash flooding and numerous landslides in southern
portions of the country.

4. Eastern Cuba, Southeast Bahamas, and the Turks and Caicos:
Monitor Melissa closely. There is an increasing risk of a
significant storm surge, damaging winds, and heavy rainfall by the
middle of the week. In eastern Cuba, the risk of life-threatening
flash flooding and landslides is increasing. A Hurricane Watch is in
effect for portions of eastern Cuba.

Tropical Storm Melissa, nearly stationary in the Caribbean Sea, is bad news. Multiple days of damaging winds and heavy rainfall are possible in Jamaica and parts of Hispaniola. Also Cuba will need to watch this.

In the next few days it might be worth keeping an eye on OVATION aurora forecasts again as geomagnetic storms are possible. During higher end events (where Scandinavia widely shows 100% probability), aurora could be seen even beyond areas highlighted on the map.
