In her ruling, US District Court Judge Karin Immergut said the Trump administration violated the 10th Amendment, and failed to provide evidence that activation of Oregon's National Guard was necessary. The temporary restraining order will be in effect until October 18.

Governor Tina Kotek and Mayor Keith Wilson both present at a protest against Trump’s plans to deploy National Guard troops to Portland. “Oregonians know this is bullshit,” Kotek says.
Know what I did on my last trip to Portland? Talked about writing, ate delicious pizza at a sidewalk cafe with friends, took a lovely walk. It’s a place people live, not a battlefield. Oregon doesn’t need Trump’s violent interference in our daily lives.

"What if part of rewilding is remembering how to migrate from village to mountaintop, not in isolation, but in community? What if the most wild way to show up in the woods is not in a 4x4 truck, but on a bus?"

Buses in the backcountry: a solution to many problems. Transit's not just a city thing.

As we gear up for more nationwide protests tomorrow, we need to be asking what the standard march and rally tactics really get us. How might they be more useful? Here's a glimpse of how adopting occupation-style spectacle into marches can give them an upgrade. #MayDayStrong #WorkersOverBillionaires

People die when we don't fix roads, or when we cut #transit. Writing about my own family's loss in my newest essay, I learned that folks in rural areas die on the road at higher rates than everyone else. #Oregon, let's get the funds to keep more folks alive this year at today's #specialsession.

Will Oregon get its act together this week and make sure to fund transit? I wrote "Uncanny Cars" in part to show just how steep the cost can be when cars are the only option we have to get around, in small towns as much as in cities. www.oregonhumanities.org/.../real/unc...

And once you’ve read that, go here and let the legislature know you support funding transit at the special session! Comments for this public hearing link need to be filed by Wednesday: olis.oregonlegislature.gov/liz/2025I1/T...

The "nonprofit killer bill" has been added into the budget reconciliation package and is being considered in committee this morning. If you want organizations where you live to continue providing critical services, now's a good time to make a call:

Funding cuts hitting home: NEH is revoking previously awarded funding to @oregonhumanities.org—the organization supporting my fellowship focused on writing about rural transit users. See their list here of ways that you can help support them in this moment.

"222 miles separate Ashland and Corvallis, and it takes under four hours to drive the most direct route. Yet by public transit, the trip will take me about twenty-four hours each way."

In 2024 Greyhound cut its stops in Southern OR. What options remain for those who can't drive?

Happy to see Critical Mass alive and well in LA. Not happy to see this driver push into an already paused intersection. A desire to get somewhere faster doesn’t equal a right to endanger lives; just 60 seconds more and the way was clear. #lacriticalmass #sharethestreets #criticalmass #losangeles
