PS: all trains, passenger and freight, take a mile to stop or more. As well, one such train that seems far away may not be fast, but it usually is, and it'll bear down before you can text your buddy about [insert sports score or any internet meme here]. Stop. Look Both Ways. Listen for a whistle.

Before I leave for bed in an hour, a final safety word for the day: only ever cross railway tracks at designated crossings, obey all signage and signals including crossing gates, and never try to beat an approaching train. Trespassing on railway property is illegal and dangerous, full stop.
