Overall, this seminar highlighted the long-term value of building infrastructure that supports both clinical care and research. This work emphasizes how integrated systems like i2b2 allow researchers to become knowledgeable from data while maintaining alignment with operational needs. #MSBMI #TMC
Dr. Murphy also leads the Healthcare Integrated Research Organization (HIRO), which focuses on advancing clinical trials using AI, large language models, and personalized medicine pushing toward more adaptive patient-centric trials. #MSBMI #AI #UTHealth #Informatics #BiomedicalInformatics
Security and patient confidentiality important to MGB. How they make sure they stay true is through some of the following:
- All patients are added with a HIPPA notification upon registration
- Any Non-Entity (Outside) data is removed
- All data is anonymized in their Qurery Tool
#MSBMI #UTHealth
Dr. Murphy is here to highlight how thoughtfully designed infrastructure allows research and care to co-exist. By integrating data tools into routine workflows, institutions can reduce barriers, without disrupting patient care. #MSBMI #UTHealth #Informatics #Healthcare
A key milestone in this work was the creation of i2b2, a widely adopted, open-source tool that connects hospital data systems with the bioinformatics research community. i2b2 now has over 300 installations worldwide. #MSBMI #BiomedicalInformatics #UTHealth #TMC #Informatics
Dr. Murphy developed the Research Patient Data Registry at Mass General Brigham, which supports more than 5,000 researchers annually. This platform provides secure access to patient records, imaging, and genomic data, which has led to accelerating research. #MSBMI #ClinicalResearch #UTHealth #TMC

Overall, Caurdian represents a shift in cardiac monitoring.
It brings together medical-grade research and consumer device convenience, pushing toward autonomous systems that can help prevent sudden cardiac death on a broad scale. #MSBMI #Healthcare #UTHealth #TMC #Cardiovascularresearch
Preliminary data show promising results. Changes in PPG-derived features can precede critical events by several seconds, offering a potential window for early action. Alerts are transmitted immediately without needing user confirmation. #MSBMI #UTHealth #Healthcare #Texasmedicalcenter
Existing wearable tech like Cardian uses photoplethysmography (PPG) signals to autonomously detect early hemodynamic instability before ECG episodes occur. By tracking changes in waveform features, it can identify early signs of reduced ejection and perfusion during ventricular tachycardia. #MSBMI
Millions remain unmonitored during the critical pre-arrest window when physiologic deterioration begins. Existing devices detect rhythm after it occurs, not before. This lack of immediate predictive insight keeps SCD a silent, preventable killer. #UTHealth #MSBMI #Healthcare #TMC #Texasmedicalcenter
Sudden Cardiac Death is an unexpected death from a cardiac cause within 1 hour of the onset of symptoms. Almost 1000 Americans on a daily basis experience SCD, accounting for up to 20% of overall deaths. #UTHealth #MSBMI #Healthcare #Cardiovascularresearch #SCD

Translating AI research into clinical care depends on more than strong model performance. Trust, usability, and integration into clinical workflows are essential for tools like PanEcho to have an impact on patient care. #MSBMI
Early work focused on detecting aortic stenosis from a single echo view using self-supervised learning. That foundational research led to PanEcho, an end-to-end system for multi-view echocardiography interpretation that supports AI-assisted clinical decisions and fits easily into existing workflows.
Manual interpretation of echo videos is time-consuming and limited to specialized experts. This research addresses how AI can support cardiologists by automating interpretation workflows, freeing up time for patient care while expanding access. #MSBMI #Healthcare #UTHealth
