Red Phalarope sleeping on the edge of the Capitol Reflecting Pool yesterday completely unbothered by the tourists and birders just feet away. I can’t imagine I’ll ever see this species this well again.

Found a hen Long-tailed Duck on the Potomac River at the end of a run today. Nice Christmas surprise.

I took an early lunch break today to join the stakeout for a wayward Bullock's Oriole that's visiting a feeder in Montgomery County, MD. It came into the feeders briefly while I was there and showed well.

Did my local Christmas Bird Count route yesterday and discovered a pond I’d managed to miss in previous years. Lucky I did because that pond had a pair of Cackling Geese - an infrequent species in the area.

I’ve seen two Tricolored Herons in Montgomery County. The first on August 3rd 2013. The second on August 3rd 2024.
