This painting is by the Frenchman François Bunel, court painter to King Henry IV. It gives an impression of what an artist’s studio or gallery looked like at the end of the sixteenth century. This studio is located in an open gallery. Statues and paintings are out on display, and prints and drawings hang on the wall. A lady is looking on in resignation at the contents being confiscated and taken away in chests.

In this Italian landscape with a long city wall and flocks of sheep, a woman is sitting outside an inn. She is looking amiably at us, while plucking a cockerel. The boy on her left is thrashing the dogs with his riding crop, and a bit further on, some travellers are sitting under a pergola in the shade. Jan Baptist Weenix lived in Italy for a few years, where he became familiar not only with the classical ruins, but also with the Mediterranean light. On his return to Utrecht, he developed into one of the most important Romanists.

The German artist Lingelbach moved with his family to Amsterdam at an early age, but he also lived in Rome for several years. He made this painting around twenty years later, on his return to Amsterdam. It is an imaginary scene of a Mediterranean harbour with exotic figures, a camel and classical architecture. Lingelbach was popular with collectors for a long time. In the eighteenth century, stadholder Prince Willem V of Orange purchased this painting for his gallery.

This rooster hanging head down from a nail, with all its feathers ruffled, looks just like the real thing, as does the grain of the wooden wall behind it. If there was no frame around it, you could almost believe this rooster was real. That is why this type of picture is called a <i>trompe-l’oeil</i>, or trick of the eye. The painting is signed by Melchior d’Hondecoeter, the most celebrated bird painter of the seventeenth century. But it is not certain whether he actually painted it himself.

This flower still-life is different from all the others, because the bouquet is not yet finished. The vase is only half full, and some of the flowers are still lying on the table. It is also unusual that all the flowers depicted are from the same season: anemones, tulips, narcissi and columbines all bloom in the springtime. Dirck de Bray came from a Haarlem family of artists. Although he did not paint many works, this still-life shows that he was a very skilled painter.

In the seventeenth century, African men – then known as Moors – were rarely depicted. And if they were, it was usually as servants in portraits. But Rembrandt painted them as subjects in their own right. Rembrandt painted the men in very thin layers of paint. Although he depicted their heads, like the white shawl, in great detail, many other parts are only sketchily painted. Presumably, Rembrandt’s main interest was in the exotic heads and how he could represent them with a very limited palette.

A huntsman in a fine red jacket is sitting at an open window. He is raising his glass and giving us a roguish look. In front of him are the attributes of his work: a hunting horn and a dead pigeon. For Dutch-speaking contemporaries, the puns would have been immediately clear. The words ‘jagen’ (to hunt) and ‘vogelen’ (to catch birds) also referred to courting and making love. Metsu was born in Leiden, where he learned to paint very finely and precisely, like the Leiden ‘fijnschilder’, or fine painter, Gerrit Dou. The shiny jug on the windowsill shows these skills clearly.

Michel Sittow came from Estonia. He trained as a painter in Flanders, which was a major art centre in those days. This is one of the few paintings we know by Sittow, which he probably made in his hometown of Tallinn. He painted the man’s face in great detail, with delicate wrinkles and a light beard growth. The man’s hands are resting on the edge of the painting, giving it the appearance of a windowsill – a trick that Sittow learned in Bruges from Hans Memling.

The Flemish artist Van der Weyden painted in oils, allowing him to work in great detail. This altarpiece shows Mary kneeling by her dead son and mourning him. His disciples look on in dismay, letting their tears flow freely. The strong emotions were intended to arouse the sympathy of the faithful. The kneeling bishop in his ceremonial robes is the odd man out in the company. He is the man who commissioned this altarpiece.

Cornelis Ploos van Amstel was an Amsterdam art collector. His collection of around 7000 drawings was a particularly famous part of his collection. Ploos van Amstel had his portrait painted on the occasion of his marriage to Elisabeth, the daughter of the painter Cornelis Troost. Her portrait is hanging here as well. Van der Mijn, who worked in Amsterdam, came from a London family of artists. The drawing that Ploos van Amstel is holding was made by Van der Mijn’s brother Frans.

And the reflections in the shiny brass jug. The painting has elements of the style of Caravaggio, who was known for his strong lighting effects and raw naturalism. However, the Flemish artist Jordaens never went to Italy. He was introduced to Caravaggism through other painters, such as Rubens.

The curtain is lifted to give us a clear view of an inn, where young and old are enjoying eating, drinking, playing and flirting. But for Jan Steen, it was not just about cheerful conviviality. His message is concealed in a small detail by the window. Up in the dark attic, a boy is blowing bubbles next to a skull. Although life is wonderful, eventually it will burst like a bubble.
