By way of introduction, I’m the resident Afrofuturist at the Kheprw Institute, the librarian of the recently restored historic Paul Laurence Dunbar Library, and I’m a Black male horror, science fiction and fantasy author.

I was asked when did I find community with what I do. My answer was when I found my community of creatives. After a momentary flutter of imposter syndrome, they reminded me that I belonged on that panel. (But the whole weekend has been surreal!)

Rodney Barnes has been my blueprint for how to move in these spaces I find myself in. D.M.C. What? Run-D.M.C. was first (cassette) I ever purchased.

This panel gave me life. Look, these creatives have meant a lot to me. The wisdom and passion of Asia Simone (illustrator of Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur: Wreck and Roll) and Tony Weaver Jr (I can’t keep his book, Weirdo, on our library shelves).

We also did a panel Wayne had pitched to NYCC, Young, Gifted, and Whack, a deep-dive conversation exploring the intersection of hip-hop, fantasy, comics, and improvisation. This panel would have been my answer to the last time I fanboyed (on the inside, I kept it professional. Mostly.)

Then Wayne and Jonathan Mangum did Nerdvana, their improv show. Someone asked Wayne when was the last time he fanboyed over someone. He said an hour ago when we met Veronica Roth.

I made it to New York Comic Con for the first time! Me and Wayne Brady did a signing for our story “Abagail’s Gethsemane” in The End of the World as We Know It: New Tales of Stephen King's The Stand. We were joined by editor extraordinaire, @dianapho.bsky.social. All copies of the book sold out!

Alright, I'm reluctantly coming to terms with me being post the "Unc" phase of my career, but I don't feel like I'm ready for "Elder" status. Is there an in-between?

"Abagail's Gethsemane", by Wayne Brady & @mauricebroaddus.bsky.social:
To take on a story involving such an iconic character and not only do it justice, but to add even further depth and complexity, is a shining testament to the absolute brilliance of these authors!

This is a moment not lost on me. @ldlewiswrites.com and myself have been friends for almost (if not over) a decade now. I was a fan first though and getting to be the first blurb for YEAR OF THE MER is something I manifested for us years ago. Pre-order yall!

Simon and Schuster is in the top left hand corner next to a logo of a person in mid-stride. Below is it Product Details and below it in a gray bar is Raves and Reviews. Below that is a blurb quote from Brent Lambert.

"Much like the sea, there are depths to L.D.'s writing that can't be fathomed. You will walk away from THE YEAR OF THE MER heartbroken, pondering the nature of power and desperately ready for more. L.D.'s a true talent that deserves a generational audience. Be here at Yemi's beginning."
