this is the third movie spin-off of the TV series 七人の刑事 Shichinin no keiji, aired irregularly on TBS between 1961 and 1979
Fast-paced and almost with a noir touch, the film is shot guerrilla-style almost entirely in and around Ueno Station.
While the ensemble cast is excellent, the locations are, so to speak, the protagonists of the story:

today's movie is pretty rare:

could I interest you in the recut and delirious In the Aftermath (Carl Colpaert, 1988)?

Hosoda's Scarlet has been everywhere on Japanese TV in the past 2 months. The movie is being pushed and advertised like no others by Hosoda I remember ...
and yet, there's a buzz that theaters are quite empty....maybe just rumors...or too many screens...let's see

My thoughts on Mamoru Hosoda’s latest.
Mamoru Hosoda’s “Scarlet” shows what hybrid animation can do: fluid battles, detailed facial expressions and a Shakespearean narrative painted on vast digital landscapes.
Mamoru Hosoda’s ‘Scarlet’ takes on ‘Hamlet’ with bold visual departure
The Oscar-nominated director re-imagines the Shakespearean tale as an animated quest through the afterlife.
