a third of the country was French (St Louis, Nouvelle-Orléans) thanks to the Haitian Revolution and Napoleon cutting his losses. Another third is basically Mexican/Spanish on the west side (see: the name of everything).

years ago i banned my little sister from all nonschool related internet/socials until age 16. I think she resents me for it but she is one of the most well-adjusted, focussed on her career of anyone I know her age, way above average. Had time to prepare before being thrown into the pool of trash..

there should be algorithm-level regulation, actually. too much manipulation, completely unfair targeting to the benefit only of platform shareholders and/or foreign states at the detriment, most terribly, to a whole generation of our young people. they're basically all on drugs.

star trek, particularly voyager, was how I imagined the future could be. post-money and scarcity, super scientific, diverse, liberal, principled. deeply skeptical we'll ever make it to that world. wish vulcans would come and help, but we're still a 'pre-warp' primitive single planet species..alas
