Really bugs me when people begin to use the characters as their own personal chars.
Years back, I had a friend who was using Jay Naylor's "Fisk Black" as his char in all chats/private messengers and didn't see the issue with it.

Mario was red to stand out against the blue background of the original arcade machine.
Luigi was green due to memory limitations, due to the limited colors able to be displayed at the same time, they had to re-use the Koopa shell color to color Luigi.
