Former MN House Rep. Jamie Becker Finn may have stepped back from serving in elected office, but politics still have a place at her independent coffee shop Makwa Coffee in Roseville.

So yeah, Tax Day sucked. Speak truth and keep taking care of each other in every way you can. 🩵

Please don't misunderstand me. I’m proud to pay my fair share to support public schools, plowed roads, healthcare for those who need, etc. But it's bullshit that any of those $$ should go towards further benefiting the ultra wealthy or disappearing people to concentration camps in other countries.

Tax Day is hard for small businesses - we work SO hard and politicians talk about us all the time and yet...WE are the ones subsidizing Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos. And that's not hyperbole. That is how our tax system is currently designed. Those bros paid nothing and we had to pay thousands.

My dad passed away almost seven years ago and I don't think he contemplated that my tax dollars would be subsidizing asshole oligarchs sending people to space for media attention.

Small Business Corner: Tax Day Edition

My dad always told me that if I got to the point where I needed to pay taxes, that was a good sign that I was doing well for myself and able to contribute to supporting others.

We truly hope you will keep visiting our shop and supporting us how you can as we weather whatever comes next. It is a very stressful time to be a small business but we are heartened by our community every single day. Thanks in advance for your patience and caring. 💙

Honesty is one of our values. We won't raise our prices until forced to. We are doing our best to stock up on our core ingredients before costs increase but there is just so much uncertainty. Some ingredients may no longer be available at all as we move forward; we just don't know.
April 7, 2025 at 5:16 PM
The pending tariffs and economic instability caused by the Trump-Musk regime will very likely force us to raise prices. Wholesale costs of coffee, tea and many other items already increased at the beginning of 2025, and the Trump Tariffs will impact nearly everything even further.
April 7, 2025 at 5:16 PM
Taking allllll of this into account, we set our prices as low as we possibly can without sacrificing financial stability (a LOT of small businesses do not even survive the first year).
April 7, 2025 at 5:14 PM
We review what other businesses near us are charging. However, we often cannot match their prices because (1) we use better quality ingredients, (2) we source locally when we can, (3) composting is more expensive, (4) we pay decent wages, and (5) landlords raise the rent every year.
April 7, 2025 at 5:12 PM
But that's not all that goes into getting a delicious vanilla latte in your hands. We also pay wages, rent, utilities, insurance, benefits, licenses - plus maintaining a clean, functional and comfortable space (furniture, decorations, equipment, repairs, etc.).

Small Business Corner (in this economy?!?!)

The prices we charge are based on what we pay. Example: the price of a vanilla latte is determined by adding up costs of: espresso beans, water, milk, flavor syrup, cup, lid, sleeve, & label. The total cost of these items is the Cost of Goods (or COGS).

At 1pm today, our sales were way down from our usual busy Saturday and I was like “bummer but glad y’all are at the protest”…and then everyone just showed up at 3:30 instead. Y’all are the best. 🫶
