With originality, soul, whimsy and eccentricity, it's an enjoyable adventure through Manny's world, particularly if your world has a focus on film.

'Shell' certainly has a tough exterior, with its messaging barely penetrating past skin deep. Still, it's a rollickingly enjoyable ride with enough laughs and gore, plus effortlessly clever performances from Elisabeth Moss and Kate Hudson to make it worth your time.

'Good Fortune' has a strong ensemble cast and good jokes that help this generic story about life feel more engaging. It has the bones to be a knock-out, but it falls flat.

More than anything, it's the recognition you feel as you watch it. The paranoia these characters feel, you know it well - the sense that something is very wrong and that we feel completely powerless to stop it. Few films this year have tapped into that collective anxiety with as much imagination, clarity and bombast as 'Bugonia', yet another remarkable film from one of the great contemporary filmmakers, the master of making us laugh in order to stop us from screaming.

'Kiss of the Spider Woman' does have gorgeous musical numbers and a beautiful story of two cellmates bonding, but the two fail to be integrated successfully to pull off a satisfying final product. The performances are knockouts, as is the singing and dancing, but this spider is one that I only want to kiss once.

It's a real risk with a music biopic that the storyteller either cannot get past their intense love for their subject or that they assume we come to the film with extensive prior knowledge. In this case, writer/director Scott Cooper is guilty of both.

'Twinless' perfectly balances its heart with the wild plot leaps the film takes you on, aided by grounded performances from both its leads. It's one of the year's most surprising films.

While it does have a strong focus on the hypersexualisation of its (underage!) female characters, the action is a cinematic treat.

'After the Hunt' is an appropriate title, not just for its discussion of the aftermath of a sexual assault accusation, but for the way every single character in the film wields a weapon, a spear sharpened to startling precision, ready to thrust it into any potential enemy at any point, regardless of whether they are lover, friend or colleague.

'Black Phone 2' feels like a missed opportunity to embellish a world doused in dread. Instead, its story adds little to the original film, while providing the cast no platform to cultivate any real creative depth within their characters. Be prepared to leave the cinema feeling as bleak and cold as the Colorado wilderness.

In a cinematic landscape that frequently feels overrun with biopics, this really is a breath of fresh air and an absolute delight that will have you giggling while pulling at your heartstrings.

When I come to a 'Tron' film, I don't want to watch people driving around recognisable streets or blowing up buildings. I want to be taken to another world; a digital world of light and sound, where the complications of human fallibility collide with machine certainty. Take away that mythical journey into the digital, and it hardly feels like Tron at all.

'The Smashing Machine' has such strong performances from Johnson and Blunt but it lacks narrative focus and an emotional core that hinders this from being a total knockout.
