Academia rewards paper publication and discourages collaboration through early publishing of data — and that incentive is holding back the progress we are making as a scientific community.

AI can organize messy data, so will this make good data management less important?

In this video, we explore three reasons why #FAIRdata is still essential for ensuring accuracy, clarity, and reliability in the age of AI.

We need to build a network of data that makes discovert easy.

Data centres should host metadata systems compliant with common standards (e.g. ISO 19115, GCMD
DIF, EML, schema.org) and host them on web platforms that consume this metadata system (e.g. OAI-PMH, OGC-CSW).

Are we educating students to thrive in a world where data publishing, open science, and data security are more important than ever?

Today I gave a keynote at UNIS. It may seem like data security and open science are in opposition, but good data management is the solution in both cases.

Publishing FAIR biodiversity data using your smartphone

I came across these reindeer at the side of the road. I opened my Seek app. You point your camera at an organism and it will try to identify it. The data contribute to iNaturalist + GBIF and can be used by scientists and policy makers alike.

Don't wait to publish your data.

People wait for years to finish that paper. If we accept that data can be reused in other research, then holding back data is also holding back that research.

Some people have being sitting on important data for more than a decade...

Did you know that SIOS has a YouTube channel?

I chair the data management working group at SIOS. You can now find many of my YouTube videos on the SIOS channel. I hope this will make it easier for the SIOS community to find tutorials on how to manage their data!

Nice to be back on Svalbard this week. Continuing to help UNIS staff and students to manage their data properly.

Do this before you use someone else's data.

Data should be published with a data usage license. You are legally obliged to follow that license.

There are also ethical considerations. Contact the authors - make sure they're not doing the analysis that you plan to!

New paper out 🥳 If you care about data management in geosciences - or believe in #OpenScience and #FAIRdata - this is a must-read. Although the Nansen Legacy project was a marine science project, the practices we discuss are broadly applicable across the geosciences.

Most researchers only share their data when publishing a paper. We should treat datasets as important research outputs in their own right: discoverable, reusable, and published early. By separating data publishing from paper publishing, we can make science more open, connected, and impactful.

When it comes to key scientific data, being open isn’t enough — they need to be FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable).
