I think that is more of a boutade than true, although younger people grew with Wings. And I think it comes from a line in a film. I can offer my experience: in 1982 (I was 12), when “Ebony and Ivory” was in the charts, I knew that Paul was in The Beatles but I had never heard of Wings.

“Spies Like Us” was recorded during a break in the Press to Play sessions. Paul came up with a trick for his guitar part in the verse, because it was too complicated! All in the book “Press to Play: That Unmistakable 80s Sound”!
