I watched the new film 'Nuremberg' this week at the Yes Planet in Jerusalem. It’s based on a book by Douglas Kelley, an American psychiatrist who interviewed the 22 top Nazis on trial back in 1946. Kelley discovered these men, the architects of the Holocaust, weren't the barbarian monsters we often imagine. Instead, he described them as workaholics and opportunists with average or above-average IQs. He concluded that the horrific capacity for genocide is shockingly ordinary and latent in our own reality. After the film as the credits began to roll, I noticed two women having an intense conversation. I approached them to ask what they made of the film. They were close friends with very different political views, both in their 70s, and one was a child of Holocaust survivors. One felt the film highlighted the Nazis' unique evil, but the other argued the process that led to the Holocaust could genuinely happen again anywhere, anytime. Nuremberg also raises many questions about international law and transitional justice. Back in 1946, there was no ICJ or ICC. The first hour of the film explored how you even begin to deliver justice with laws that don’t exist yet for crimes that defy imagination. Other questions raised: Is seeking to understand the perpetrators (the psychiatrist's job ahead of the trial) a moral risk? The most disturbing moment of the film wasn’t played by an actor. It was a black and white scene where the prosecution shows that devastating documentary of the concentration camps as evidence. This also really happened in the trial. It was the first time the footage of mass graves filled with emaciated bodies was shown publicly to a global audience. And what does Göring do? He simply dismisses it as fake news and lies with utter conviction. This speaks to an eternal danger: Genocide begins not with killing, but with narratives that justify dehumanization followed by denial.
