Geology, especially glaciers and volcanoes; painting landscapes; natural history; walking in the countryside
Balance of opinion so far is that it is a smelting byproduct. Or maybe hematite... Reminds me a bit of the widmanstatten patterns in meteorites
I am busy looking at my Italian black sand from the Baratti black sand beach where slag from working Elba iron ore wound up.
One grain type that puzzles me is the dark grey platy grains which might have 60° cleavage.
Natural or a smelting product?
These grains were caught in 0.5 and 025 mm seives

I joined almost 40 years ago... OUGS saw me through my BA(Hons) and I enjoyed it so much I stayed!
H.H.Read said "The best geologist is he who has seen the most rocks." Generations of OU geology students agree!
This was why we started one of the OU's largest, and oldest societies!

Are you studying geology at the OU?

I use mine as a mini, quick, oven! It's the "air" and "fryer" bit that's confusing

A little #urbangeology for this #fossilfriday: the pavements of Verona are covered almost completely with Ammonitico Rosso, preserving these beautiful ammonites. It proves quite a hazard for a geologist walking the city head down!

Take a look at past entries to see what appeals to judges... is it colour? Composition? Subject matter? Geology? Technical ability? Informative annotation? Or, as one of our Presidents said: "one that I would like to see on my office wall"!

🧪⚒️Just released Mike Hudec on salt tectonics. Amazingly, salt structures can be many tens of kilometers across. And because salt is extremely weak compared to other rocks and minerals, it is the first to deform in the presence of stresses. It's often involved in forming hydrocarbon reserves.
