I'm starting New Wonk Media, a site for fiction and more narrative exploration of RPGs. This first post, for myself as much as for any audience, is attempting to explain why.
A manifesto for wonky storytelling
Storytelling is primary to being human, to being human here and now in the 21st century. Telling stories helps us understand who we are, what's going on around us, and how to imagine a better world. Storytelling is also what separated the roleplaying game from the wargame, and why the former has exploded in popularity as people were finally able to watch game sessions from the comfort of their own homes.

"After the locusts and pits and boiling seas. After the war in heaven and feasting on earth. After the seven years of blood and forty years of night. There is magic. Magic and bone. Where streets grow weeds and skyscrapers stand hollow. Where old gods wake and new gods form in the hearts of the wayward. Where cult and banner flourish.

After sharing some more DIE fiction, this week I felt compelled to write about what an awful lot of my RPG-based characters are or at least look like: Self-inserts.
Introducing my self-inserts
I appreciate each and every one of you who read my story last week, hopefully it gave some entertainment or provoked some thought. As was likely obvious after reading the whole thing, Nat was my character in the most recent game of DIE I ran; the story itself both tied in to some events that happened in-game as well as attempted to give some background that explained the game’s conceit and gave Nat an impetus for getting everyone into DIE.

Really enjoyed my time at PAX Unplugged this weekend! Ran into @willjobst.bsky.social and got a chance to chat with a whole bunch of folks I didn't already know as well. Now though, I'm tired, and lugging my #ttrpg purchases back to Boston.

If any one topic is ‘the core’ of this System Hack, this would be it. Base building is the underlying gameplay loop of RimWorld and it is also a topic du jour in RPG circles, with the (admittedly poorly detailed) stronghold building from the D&D days of yore coming back into focus as more gamers want broader storyline opportunities. For our purposes, of course, if we’re making a colony sim we need to make a colony.

PAX Unplugged 2025 is this weekend! Which you probably already know, on account of clicking on this article while you're on your way  there or already in Philly. Alas, I won't be there this time around. I hear tell some other Cannibal Halflings will be there, though, and I don't have to be present to Know Things Worth Your Time. Let's go over some games for you to buy, some games for you to play, and some interesting events to check out.

The News. You're bringing the truth, no matter how bad it hurts.
The Show. Your music cracks open the world and moves people to your beat.

Updating these for #AW3rd is our first stretch goal.
Let's go, let's go, let's go!

In 2016, the Apocalypse World 2nd Ed campaign ended at $149,681. We'd like to beat that!

At $149,682, we'll get with the original authors and update three classic playbooks:
• The Faceless by Bret Gillan
• The News by Josh Savoie
• The Show by Elliot Baker
Apocalypse World: Burned Over
The 3rd edition of the groundbreaking original.

In talking about DIE on Cannibal Halfling, Seamus always said it 'hit me so hard that fiction falls out'. For today's post I'm reflecting on why it is and providing a bit of a preamble for my first piece of fiction on the site, which is based on a DIE character.
Gaming stories: Why DIE?
I’m writing gaming fiction again, and just like last time it’s centering a character that I created while playing DIE. I spoke a bit about my experience over on Cannibal Halfling, but the important thing to know is that it’s a trend. Over my four different experiences playing DIE, three of them I played the primary scenario (‘Reunited’) and three of them led to me creating characters that just tweaked my brain a little, that just broke me a little.

Welcome to Crowdfunding Carnival for November! There are a ton of campaigns out there this month; my initial pass easily got to 20 even after I realized that there were a lot and started filtering more aggressively. We’ve definitely got more designers putting in the juice, but there are some other interesting developments going on. First, Gamefound has come roaring onto the scene again.

After reviewing TTRPGs for nearly a decade my only addition is that 'sometimes' is underselling it. Even well-known, ENnie-winning games often crumple at a table where the players don't think in the same way the designer and their friends did.
Sometimes you'll see an indie tabletop RPG that's like, okay, wonderfully imaginative premise, and there's some genuinely innovative stuff going on here rules-wise, but you can REALLY tell it's never been in the hands of a playtest group whose GM wasn't also the game's author.

James Hoffmann makes a clear warning in all of his espresso technique videos: Buying an espresso machine will get you a new, expensive hobby way before it gets you better coffee.
the fun thing about home espresso brewing is it will absolutely not save you money, especially if you are the kind of person who tends to become obsessive about technical details

Ok, @lumpley.bsky.social & I have been very up-front over the years on our sales data & etc, so here's a thing, & thanks Will, for bringing it up. Starting a career in #ttrpgs means making games. it means writing in a goggle doc or notebook, trying mechanics with a friend, finding 3 folks to play.
I don't really see any false vision of success — virtually anybody who talks about it is very up front, and people who ask about "starting a career in games" get told very plainly that the only way to have money while working in RPGs is to start with money.

You and Granma were, frankly, on the worst terms. That's what made it such a surprise when you got a package from your cousin, who had wound up being the executor of her estate. Maybe, your cousin writes, Granma was able to overlook your differences since you had become a fellow academic? Either way, the actual package is a copy from her rare books collection, willed to you.
