Like I would rather have someone just be honest about me being bad at something, especially if I’m in a place to improve with practice, because having someone lie to you so obviously feels like a kick in the gut, if they absolutely must say a compliment, make it something true

A prime example when I was learning a new instrument and another band member told me how I sounded so good after I admitted I needed more practice (there is absolutely no way they could’ve head me from the position they were sitting at so that is how I know it was disingenuous)

I cannot emphasize enough how stressed out it makes me when someone tells me “Wow, you’re really good at [thing that took years of practice and effort to learn]! Can you teach me how to do all of that in the next 15 minutes?”
