Curious how the silica dust impacting coal miner health compares to the silicate minerals used in enhanced rock weathering. Anyone have ideas?

Matt, this is a beautiful remembrance. So kind to include all Jeff’s friends. It shows what a deep community he cultivated throughout his days. 💚

As universities embrace AI, corporate influence on research, governance and values is growing.

What happens when higher ed’s pursuit of tech prestige meets Silicon Valley’s profit motives?

I got this sent to me from a Pascua Yaqui undergraduate student in Tucson who is in a soils class this semester. She said it was so meaningful to see not only women but someone from her tribe up there. I just about cried. This work matters. We matter ❤️🤍💙

Check out our team’s new paper about reducing nitrogen losses in US row-crop agriculture, by @mikebadzmierowski.bsky.social.

Nitrogen is essential for crop production, but its overuse reduces air and water quality and emits potent GHGs. This paper examines solutions.

If you’re a climate/energy person, I will take your portrait pro bono.
After far too many years, I've got myself a new Guardian byline pic, very kindly taken pro bono by Nick Bowring. It was getting like The Picture of Dorian Gray in reverse.
Embrace the ravages of time!
My dad just took this photo in Acadia National Park

Am I standing in front of the future, or the past? Given the amount of regressive climate and environmental policies, and pro fossil fuel incentives we’re seeing before us, I honestly don’t know.
Seriously, what the hell is going on?

To gauge how it’s “working,” one would have to be clear on what the actual work is, which is not helping to educate children but rather to imbed these systems in a way that they cannot be removed, establish them as a source of truth, and destabilize labor.
Silicon Valley’s Drive to Get AI Into America’s Schools Is Working
Educators across the country are bringing chatbots into their lesson plans. Will it help kids learn or is it just another doomed ed-tech fad?

There are images like this all over … Havana, Cuba. Banners of Castros face and militarized policy around the city.
This is a real photograph of Washington, DC this week, where the United States president has ordered military occupation in peacetime, and ordered the display of colossal portraits of himself.

Positive tipping points for climate, like the UK phasing out coal, show how big steps toward a low-carbon future can suddenly become unstoppable.

Can we identify where the next tipping points could happen, and figure out how to help trigger them?

These researchers say YES.

This morning: MPD and ATF conducted a massive paramilitary operation, with officers in masks and camo, in the Mt. Pleasant neighborhood of DC within 500 yards of an elementary school while neighborhood children were heading to school.

On their third day of classes.
In my free time (haha jk that doesn't exist) I think up topics for #AAG2026 sessions. Today's session that I think could be fun and interesting:
"Surfaces and subsurfaces as spaces of climate action."
