1/ The US Government has quietly removed a memorial to Black soldiers who died in World War II from the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten, South Limburg. The move follows a complaint from the right-wing Heritage Foundation to the American Battle Monuments Commission. ⬇️

I stand with Yasmin Williams. I know the fascists running are government are malicious, cruel people. But something about this story hurts so, so much. To organize a claque against an artist you are presenting?!? An artist who kept her commitment to perform when others didn't? I am so sad.

Staffers say center president Ric Grenell's office set aside passes for the group, which booed and heckled the musician.

When I was a buyer at a large indie, my rule of thumb was:

1 preorder: huh, let me take a closer look at this one
2 preorders: we need to stock this book
3 preorders: we should order enough to face this out
4+ preorders: this should be on front-of-store display
More detail: When booksellers get pre-orders, it's a quantitative and qualitative signal that there is like *something here* about a book. The avalanche of new books out there is hard to communicate if you're not in the industry, and pre-orders are one of vanishingly few signals. It is a real thing!
The thing about pre-orders: If you pre-order thru an indie bookstore (which generally doesn't cost you up-front!) it is HUGE for the lifeblood of the book, it is a boost to authors, the publisher, and the booksellers who steward this life. It's a little thing but it's meaningful should this inspire!

After Dad retired, he wrote a complaint letter to Frito-Lay because there was too much grease at the bottom of the bag. He complained or complimented *everything* all day long.

"When Thomas made her debut in Hollywood, she was a student at UCLA and wanted to focus on writing and directing, but she quickly learned it was “rough” for women."

It's a small note at the end of the story. I hope she talks more about her experiences with that.

I need a gallon of ketchup for the 6 pounds of beef I bought last week. (Yes, I recently joined Costco as well - for the same reasons.)
We got a Costco membership for the first time in our lives today. They asked why & I said because treat your workers well, you value diversity, & you didn’t cave in to authoritarian demands. He said: “We’ve been getting lots of folks saying that, thanks for joining.”

Who needs a gallon of ketchup?

I was only nine, but I remember this song. Matched the vibe of the time. Excellent album as well.
“Just The Way You Are” wins Song & Record of the Year today in 1979.

“It wasn’t an instant hit,” said Joel. When opening for the Doobie Bros, “we almost didn’t play it,” but “the place went insane. ‘That’s the guy who does that song!’ We all looked at each other. From then on it was up and up.”
