Just ordered this Soviet era ZENIT-C camera for the Crappy Commie Camera Party in June.

The best part is it’s coming from Ukraine. Doing a small part to support the country since our coward president betrayed Ukraine on behalf of Putin.

Black-capped chickadee at a bird feeder. Taken on a vintage Minolta 7D. Minolta introduced the camera in 2005. It was the first DSLR with IBIS. Sony bought Minolta the following year and reintroduced the the 7D as the A100 with a 10MP sensor in 2006

Kodak X-15: My mom gave me this camera for Christmas when I was 10. I can’t imagine how many rolls of film she paid to develop—only to get blurry shots, fingers in the frame, or my “artistic” compositions of trash cans and toilets. It's disappointing that they quit making 126 film cartridges 25 years ago. I't like to use it again. Just to see if I can get better photos. Pentax K1000: I bought this right after finishing Army basic training at the Fort Polk PX. My first SLR—fully manual. Manual focus, aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. It wasn’t the best camera available, but it was the best I could afford as an E2 private making $640 a month. A great camera to learn on. Minolta 7xi: My pride and joy for years. When I bought it, it was hands down the most advanced autofocus camera on the market. It was the first to use AI—Minolta called it “fuzzy logic.” With eye-start technology, it would begin focusing and metering as soon as I looked through the viewfinder. Paired with xi telephoto lenses, it even auto-zoomed to frame what it thought was the best composition. The matrix metering was awesome. Pretty advanced stuff for 1991, especially after shooting with the K1000 for six years. The battery door broke sometime in the early 2000s, and like everyone else, I moved on to digital. By then, Sony had bought out Minolta. Recently, I found a replacement battery door on eBay, and to my surprise, the camera still works. The 7xi represents a special time in my life—I was 26, making $100K a year clearing landmines in postwar Kuwait, and had no real adult responsibilities and was still confident of my immortality.

The Minolta 7xi & 9xi were two of the most underrated cameras of the early ‘90s. Their DNA lives on in today’s Sony cameras.

This great gray owl doesn't exactly live up to its name. It looks more brown and white streaked than gray. The facial disc is gray, however, and you can see a hint of golden eye.
